MY FINEST HOUR

America at Last

Maricia D. C. Johns
In my finest hour I see a people's tears

I see a people's fears

In my finest hour I feel people's pain

I feel people's fear of trying to stay sane

In my finest hour I see people who are weary

I see people whose eyes are now bleary

In my finest hour I see the dogs snarling, biting

I see people who are still fighting

In my finest hour I see whips and chains

I see old men and women on canes

In my finest hour I see babies taken screaming from their mothers

I see babies with their mothers smiling at others

In my finest hour I see the people of New Orleans

I see the people on the fields of green

In my finest hour I see a homeland that cries

I see a land that lets out collective sighs

In my finest hour I see people who are called colored people

I see people who will watch history in a building with a steeple

In my finest hour I see Harry T. Moore and his wife

I see every day people who don't want any more strife

In my finest hour I see people trying to get up a slippery slope

I see people with hope

In my finest hour I see the people on the train

I see the train as it crosses the Great Plains

In my finest hour I see the slaves building the Capital steps

I see people offering to help

In my finest hour I see through all the tears

I see people shiver with their fears

In my finest hour of January 20, 2009

I see my country truly becoming mine

In my finest hour I see the president

I see the culminating event

In my finest hour I see a people who know they are no longer considered libel

In my finest hour I see Black History becoming American History as he takes the oath of office with his hand on the Bible

I see all of these things both old and new

In my finest hour I am America and I see all of you
