It was 1988, my hair was big, nails were long and I was doing nails at, Nail Reflections in Oceanside, NY. I needed a new car, sporty yet affordable, after all Dad was not footing the bill! Next door was a tanning parlor , one day the owner pulled up in a Nissan Pulsar NX '"black , she took me for a drive , t-tops , detached hatch back, pop up head lights including futuristic angular tail lights, collectively all the girly features I fancied, I adored it! After ordering my car, there existed one issue, it was a stick shift!
So, my boss Phyllis at the time ,( also possessed big hair and longer nails) owned a flashy trans am, (yes she's Italian ,however, I don't stereotype, bottom line - she was hot and looked great in it) . She took me out to teach me how to drive a shift. I was doing great UNTIL; I arrived at my first red light ---- on a hill----with an 18 wheeler behind me! I had room to roll back ONCE, about a six inches. That was it, I thrust the Trans Am into park abandoned the car and exchanged seats with Phyllis! I was sweating she was bellied over laughing!
Following another practice run, I was improving, so I thought! I went to pick up the car, got in and thought "What the hell did I get myself into!" I was a nervous wreck. I just wanted to get home safely; I didn't even realize I could adjust the seat! I drove all the way home with the back of the seat tilted forward, inches from the steering wheel while making sure no one rear ended me!
After getting acquainted with my Nissan Pulsar NX, I was impressed with the car beyond the allure of the exterior. It handled great, fantastic mileage and plenty of room. It had back seats that folded down for extra space in the hatch back. The t-tops were off all summers long, I zipped around in that car feeling safe and secure with pride and pleasure! It never broke down and I never, in the 12 years I owned it needed to replace or fix anything, except to upgrade the radio, need to have good sounds!
Thus, my first car purchase was a success, and I did it all on my own!
