My First Month at Associated Content

Pat Bartels
I stumbled on to the Associated Content website by accident. I had been writing how to articles on eHow and was getting a little tired of trying to fit what I wanted to write into the how to format. I was so excited when I came across this site.

After I submitted my first article here I was hooked. Everyone I have come in contact with has been so helpful and kind. It has been a very wonderful experience for me. I didn't start exploring my writing creativity until September of 2009. I guess I've just been so busy with other things that I never took the time. Occasionally, in the past, I would sit down and write a few things or send a letter to the editor if I felt strongly about something.

I have found that this is hard work. Thinking of things that I want to write about, doing the research to make sure I get it right, and then sitting down at my computer and putting what I want to say in words.

When I was in high school we had to write a book review for literature class. I chose to do mine on To Kill a Mockingbird. The teacher would then sit down with each individual student and discuss the review that had been written. He would ask telling questions to make sure that we had actually read the book that we were reviewing and not just skimmed through and picked out a few facts to highlight for our reviews.

It came to the time for me to sit down with him. I was nervous. I was very shy back then. He looked over my review, and asked me a few questions. Then he looked at me and said, "You know you could probably choose writing as a career." I'm sure that a smile came across my face, but I didn't really know what to say to him. I have thought of his words to me often and they have always pleased me. I don't think that I ever really believed him.

One of the first people I came in contact with here on Associated Content was Abby Greenhill. At first I didn't realize that Abby was a pet Labrador retriever, but I know that now. The person behind Abby made me feel welcome and after I had only been here for a few weeks she mentioned me in her Writer's Showcase. Talk about encouragement.

Another person who was one of the first to greet me was Theodore Kruczek. He helped me with my bio and gave me several suggestions that were helpful. He hasn't been on AC much longer than I have, and I appreciate his suggestions.

Thanks also to S Faloon for your help and to all those who have chosen to follow me and comment on things that I have written. I'm having a lot of fun reading and writing and I hope that everyone keeps stopping by even if it's just to say hello.
