I thought I could write on how to deal with holiday stress. I am really good at telling people what to do. I thought maybe I could write an article on essential oils that will help you relax. Those are subjects that I know something about, so they would be a good place to start right?
But then I start to think about it. Why would anyone want to read anything I have to write? Especially a first article. Are those not topics for seasoned writers? People who are already tagged as professionals? Now we start to slip into a murky area. The area of the blank page.
This is the area where you sit and stare at the blank page and just think. And nothing that you think of seems good enough to write about for your very first attempt. I am not talking writers block. I have way to many ideas in my head for it to even come close to writer's block. I would say it is "starters syndrome".
"Starter's Syndrome" we have all been there. You know the drill. You find this great new gadget you just have to have, but when you get it home, it never even comes out of the box, because you just have to have the right moment to use it. Or you sign up for some great project on the web and then just can't find the time to give it the full attention it deserves. You have had "Starter's Syndrome".
My solution to this would simply to just write. Everyone has to start somewhere. Just pick a topic. Any old topic will do. This is your first article. The one you are cutting your teeth on, so to say. It probably won't make you money, but it will accomplish one very important thing.
What's that? It gets you started. You have something on paper. See that? My paper is no longer just a blank sheet of paper staring up at me. It has content. It may not be good content, but it is content. I can now call myself a writer. Take note I didn't say I could call myself a good writer, but a writer none the less. And I have my first article. Whew that was a bit easier than I thought!

Post a CommentThis was a great article! I kow exactly how you feel.
Yes, we definetly all have had starter syndrome. Brainstorming is one of the best cures in helping you to write!! What I usually do is write down one word, mill over it for a minute, and write down ideas which come to my mind.:) Keep up the awesome work!
Great work on your first article.
I complete understand!! I just posted my first also. But with me it seems every time is the first. I always have a hard tie getting past the first two sentences but when I do I've got it made.
Judy, your article was great. Some people get so stymied when it comes to writing. I hope this was a good ice breaker for you. Looking forward to your next one.
You said a mouthful sister.
