My Five Star Stay at Danbury Hospital

A Pleasant Stay at a World Class Hospital

John Troiano
With uncontrolled fever, burning lungs and several fainting episodes, my doctor checked me into Danbury Hospital in CT. I contracted pneumonia and had to spend a week in the hospital. I was scared of what was to come. However, I discovered they treat people as hotel guests rather than hospital patients.

The shared room was immaculate with a spacious and tidy bathroom. Housekeeping changed my bed sheets daily. A hospital administrator checks you in via a mobile registration unit. My first visit was from my assigned nurse. She set the tone for my stay at the hospital.

She was lovely. I know I wasn't the only person spending time at the hospital yet she still made me feel special. Every nurse to follow offered the same treatment. The nurse's aides were also sympathetic.

I'm very nervous around needles because my veins are difficult to find. Many times inexperienced practitioners will continue to pierce my skin until they hit a vein. Very Painful! I mentioned this early on to my nurse and she communicated my feelings to the entire staff.

Since most hospitals are teaching centers, you'll find random doctors and nurses making practice visits. This gets annoying when you find yourself repeating your story endlessly. At Danbury Hospital, the visiting staff member reads your chart prior to dropping in leading to a constructive discussion.

At the end of each day you're given a menu to choose the following day's meals. It's difficult to feed hundreds of people and ensure good taste. The kitchen staff at Danbury Hospital does a good job. It's not haute cuisine with elaborate presentation but simply prepared and fresh.

They're very attentive to special needs. I had gastric bypass so my stomach cannot handle certain medicines and I'm unable to swallow large pills. They accommodated my requirements switching medicines when possible and dispensing necessary medications intravenously.

My attending physician delivered exactly what I expected- intelligence, a down to earth attitude, and good bedside manner. I felt very comfortable with him and was confident he would get me better.

I paid several visits to the radiological department for tests and each time I felt comfortable. Those rooms tend to be cold so they ensure you have a warm blanket and a pillow to rest your head.

Strangely, I was slightly upset at check out. I was treated as a sick person should be treated, with compassion, understanding and most importantly respect. I'll recommend Danbury Hospital to anyone requiring inpatient care.
