My Funny Vacation Memories

The "Gooch" and the "Malt Vinegar Man"

I do believe that the funniest vacation memories I have did not actually happen to me but my father and my cousin, who was also with us. It happened when I was about 11 years old, and my cousin was either 15 or 16.

We were on our way to Myrtle Beach South Carolina and were having a blast. The first thing that happened was we stopped at a little country store, in North Carolina, which had good food and nice souvenirs. Some of the souvenirs from which to choose were coffee mugs that had did funny pictures and sayings on them. My father was looking at them and reading the funny sayings. My father was a good reader, but for some day one word just completely got him good. The mug had a picture of a grumpy looking guy with his hair all tussled and a big smirk on his face. The word under the picture was "grouch". My dad misread it and asked my cousin what the word was and if it was "gouch" (pronounced it "gooch"). Well for some reason that got my cousin so tickled he did not stop laughing for miles (until he fell asleep).

Ah, but the paybacks are wonderful. We drove for a long time and decided to stop for supper at Long John Silvers which was in Myrtle Beach. We had a wonderful lunch and laughs at my father's expense. Well it was at my father's expense until my cousin was looking at a bottle of the vinegar on the table and decided he was going to open it to smell of it. Well, he started to unscrew the cap when all of a sudden the bottle broke into pieces and he got covered from the waist down with malt vinegar. We got up to leave and he was pretty mad. We, of course, were all laughing. On the way out the door my cousin just about poked a hole in my mother's back trying to get her to hurry up and get out. There were not a lot of people in there, but the few who were there were turning their heads looking. At the time we had a truck which had a camper top on it, so my cousin changed clothes in the back of the truck. However, for the next several miles until we got to our hotel, he smelled pretty dog-gone good, not!

So until the day my father passed away he was known as "gooch". And to this very day my cousin is know as "Malt Vinegar Man".

It is absolutely amazing the after 29 years I still remember that day as if it were yesterday. And I still get a big laugh out of it also.

Watch out for the malt vinegar bottles at Long John Silvers, they may just attack you.
