My Funny Valentine

Stephanie R. Barry
How I met my husband: One day as I sat on the computer just after swearing I was going to close my Tagged page, here comes this guy who writes; how are you lady? I respond immediately but also realizing I had seen him before. I had run across his Tagged page a thousand times but had no interest. After all, I was looking for a darkskinned brother not one who was light. I had my mind set and made up that I wanted my valentine more black then the darkest blackberry. Something on the inside of me though wanted to talk with him this time. We chit-chatted for a while on the computer and decided we would meet. I find this man has no car so I have to pick him up from the train station. In the back of my mind I am thinking; He's not in the skin I want him in and he has no ride, O' Lord, what am I doing? I went ahead and tried my luck, met him at the train station and he stood looking more sweet than candy. I am beating myself up now and thinking; this is a major fail! I wanted to just take off and leave but I have good morals and could not do that to anyone.

As I waved for him and he got into the car, I realized he was a very soft spoken guy which sent more red flags but I keep going. I noticed he seem to have an accent and as we talked more I find he was from Africa, how nice? We decided that we were going to have dinner at Wendy's and talk more to get to know each other. So we are talking and riding and the conversation is so good. I pulled up to the fast food place and we got out and went in. I noticed the menu was different and acknowledge to the young lady who was there. I said to her, "wow, you all have changed your menu completely!" The woman agreed that there had been some changes to the menu. As we sat down to wait for our food I suddenly realized we were in Arby's and not Wendy's which was next door to Arby's! I felt really stupid at that moment and he never said a word as I made a complete idiot of myself. That's the moment I realize he was not a person who would embarrass me or judge me for being completely absent-minded. From that day forward he and I became one and shortly after that we were married. We now have a year and one half behind us with a beautiful baby girl who lights up our life. He was my funny valentine!
