My Garden

Brittany Trexler
what should I find
to my surprise today
in my secret garden
(the one without the walls)?
my spirit led me there once again
walking quietly
a poem singing in my head
I walked down its pebbled stairs
now covered in autumn's leaves
thinking of how it's ours
mine and Sean's
(because I'm sure we love it
more than anyone else)
everyday, we sit
side by side
pondering and speaking of everything
in our lives
laughing, I think of my yellow fish
(whom, this past weekend, I decided
to name Benjamin)
the pond has almost cleared
of spring's dead remains
bringing with it a new kind of beauty
that I am finally beginning to understand
even as my garden quiets
preparing to sleep for winter
the birds still sing of spring
that shall come again
oh bird!
I almost forgot to tell
as I approached the bridge
(with its new coat of red)
I saw a bird
probably stood taller than waist high
he flew into the air
startled by my presence
and landed on the dock
"please don't move,"
I whispered breathlessly
and he sat there for awhile
watching me just as curiously
as I watched him
and then
he flew away
