My Granddaughter is Getting Married on Saturday

A 3rd Generation Wedding

Sondra C
I remember the day that my daughter brought her home
and gently handed her to her first born son
I remember how he smiled as he held her in his arms
gently - as if he feared she would break.

I remember giving her baths in the kitchen sink
and she sat in the water and splashed
and laughed when she got water
on my face, the floor, my dress-
and all over the place.

I remember when she started to walk,
talk, and hug and kiss me
she talked to me and held me tight
and said "Mama, I luv you"

I remember when she spent the night
at my house because her brother did
and so she wanted to do the same
I remember as if it were yesterday
and yet it was 28 years ago.

She woke in the middle of the night
crying for her 'mother'
She yelled and the tears fell
as I cuddled her in my arms.

"Go back to sleep", I told her,
'mommy' will be here in the morning'
but she still cried and yelled and
so I rocked her gently
until her tears subsided
and she fell back to sleep in my arms.

I had a special song that I used to sing her
A song my mother sang to me,
A song passed on through generations
and she sang to her daughter
to comfort her before she went to sleep.

Maybe some of you have heard it
Maybe some of you sang it to your child
as a bedtime song
It went like this, and if you know it
you will also remember the melody.

"A little boy and a little girl......
in ecstasy of bliss..
Said the little boy...to the little girl..
Please.. give-me- just one -kiss..

The girl looked up in- great
surprise.......
Your a stranger sir said she.....
BUT --
I will give you..
just- one- kiss........
When the Apples Fall From the Lilac Tree..."

My little girl is a big girl now and is getting married..
