My Grandson at Bat - Baseball Poem

My Heart Hopes

JUNEANN REED
He's had his drink
Wiped his pants,
Secured his helmet
And took his practice swings.

His mind is racing
Grandma's here today,
I want to show her a great hit
As he steps up to the plate.

Who's heart is beating harder
His little heart or mine,
I clench my fists and hold my breath
His bat is clutched so tight.

That little guy on pitchers mound
Eyes my grandson up and down,
Knows this little red-headed twirp
Could send one out of town!

Here comes the ball
It whizzes by,
Strike one says the ump
"Send out the next one" - I yell.

He's scrunched way down
Eyes so intent,
Please let him hit this ball
I hold my breath.

Luckily he didn't strike
The ball was way up high,
OK - it's yours...
And now we wait again.

How can such short seconds
Put a tear in Grandma's eye,
Because we want them happy
And to be the big, big guy.

On that mound began the action
Toward the plate that baseball came,
And then the action happened
And his first step to fame.

The ball it flew over third
And dropped behind a kid,
Then it bumped and it rolled
Way back to the fence.

Meanwhile my red haired grandson
Excited as could be,
Rounded first, second and third
And put his best smile on for me.

I'm going to make it home, Grandma
I'm sure his little mind said,
I told you I could do it
Yes, my little lad - you can.

Just remember all your life
When you're up against the odds
Stand up and meet the task
And do the best you can.

  • I purposely didn't rhyme this poem - I wanted my feelings to stand out.
  • My red-haired grandson tries so hard and I love him so much.
  • Encourage your grandkids - help them be their best.
Many of us grandparents sat on those similar hard benches watching our kids play sports and now, we sit again. Just remember, those kids who are busy and learning to be a team member are working on a successful lifestyle.
