My Grape Idea

Ken Currie
I was in Paris, France the other day. No, wait... it was Naturita, colorado. There was a woman there who had grown some grapes in her yard and I bought a few boxes full. Ever since ancient times grapes have been used to produce a drink that to this day is still popular all around the world. That drink is grape juice. But what you may not have known is that grape juice can be made into wine. Wine is a popular drink in France, Italy and parts of California. You may have heard of it yourself.

I have bought grapes from Naturita every fall now for several years and about two years ago I looked into the idea of making some of my grapes into wine. It is quite a process. I have broken it down into steps for you here.

Step 1: get some grapes.

Step 2: squeeze the grapes until juice comes out of them

Step 3: what you now have is grape juice

Step 4: put the grape juice into some sort of container

Step 5: put the container somewhere

Step 6: do not remember where you put it

Months, or possibly years, later you will find it and the grape juice will be gone and somehow wine will have gotten into the container. How this happens is still a mystery even to modern scientists. Much fuss has been made over what wine to serve with what kinds of food. The debate has at times been every bit as caustic as the debate over why the last syllable in both chardonnay and cabernet sounds the same. Anyway, the answer is that red wine should be served with everything. There is no such thing as white wine. If what you have in your glass is white it is probably milk, and should be served with cookies. Although red wine goes well with cookies too. As soon as I find mine I'll show you.
