My Haunted Experience

Cindy Wright
I will share with you my haunted experience, something I have told no one but my family and closest friends. This is because some people think I am crazy to even think that I experienced a haunting. I was 22 years old; my son was just starting to walk. My husband and I moved to a big farm house, my husband was to work on our landlord's farm in exchange for getting the house rent free.

My husband was not much for sticking around. He was always deciding life was more exciting to be out running around then being a husband and father. After just a few days in our new home he up and left us. I called some friends of mine who lived nearby that I had not seen in awhile to let them know where I lived and to invite them over.

When I told them where I lived, they started telling me I needed to move out. They said they had a friend who had lived there and that the house was haunted. I laughed, telling them they were crazy and there was no such thing as a haunted house. They proceeded to tell me that no one had ever lived in that house very long. They said there friend had told them of red eyes that they saw in the closet upstairs, and that the upstairs always had noises in the middle of night. I still laughed at them telling them I had not seen or heard a thing. They asked if I had been upstairs yet. I said yes, the day we came to look at the house I had went upstairs but since there were 2 bedrooms downstairs we were not using the upstairs. They warned me to please be careful.

Later that night another friend of mine came to visit. I told her the stories my other friends had told me. She wanted to go upstairs and see if we saw anything. Plus I had told her there were some clothes in the closet that the previous tenants had left behind. She wanted to see what kinds of clothing they had left. So upstairs we went. As we were heading up the stairs we felt very cold. My friend committed that she thought it was very odd to be so cold. I informed her that since I wasn't using it I kept the door shut and no heat was going upstairs.

When we got to the first bedroom and were heading to the second my friend started jumping and screaming. She scared me nearly half to death. I yelled asking her what on earth was wrong. Then I started laughing. There was a dead bird in the floor. No big deal to me. Then we realized that there were no open windows. She wanted to know how the bird got there. I said oh it must have come in downstairs and came up here. Not really believing this my self, as I always kept the upstairs door shut.

We then went to the second bedroom and went to the closet where the clothes were kept. The light in the closet did not come on as I flipped the switch. We were standing in front of the closet, getting ready to pull the clothes out so we could see them, when all the sudden we saw red - glowing eyes in the back of the closet. We ran down those stares screaming our heads off and slamming the door behind us.. When we got downstairs her boyfriend was running inside to head upstairs to check on his. We told him what had happened. He laughed at us like crazy but he would not go upstairs and check.

I had a big chair and my friend insisted that I push it in front of the upstairs door. I did this and we sat around talking about the stories of the house I had been told. I ended up laughing at myself and was convinced we had imagined it all because of the stories.

My friend left and my son and I went to bed. For a couple days everything was fine. I heard no noises or anything. But the farm house had more creepiness than just the stories I heard. My landlord came over one day to fix my water pump and I told him that my husband had left and I could not afford to pay rent the following month and I could not do farm work. He smiled at me and grabbed at the zipper on my pants and said I am sure we can figure out something. I jerked away and told him I would either come up with the money or I would move as soon as I could. He left refusing to fix my water pump since I wouldn't be able to pay rent.

Some friends came over that night and we played cards until the wee hours. We finally went to bed. The next morning my friends left. I spent the day cleaning the house and playing with my son. We went to bed that night and I fell quickly asleep. Around 1 am I was awaken. I thought I heard someone in the house. I got the courage to get up and see if anything was happening. I went all over the house and did not see anything and went back to bed. A few minutes later I thought I heard movement upstairs. I lay in bed for a few hours to scared to get up and check. Finally the noises stopped and as the sun was coming up I fell back to sleep.

The next day I got up. I fixed my son some breakfast and went in to the living room to watch some TV. I noticed the chair I had put in front of the upstairs door was clear across the room and the upstairs door was wide open. I shut the door and put the chair back thinking I must have looked upstairs when I heard the noises and forgot about it.

The next day my Dad came over to take me to the grocery store. When we returned, once again the chair was clear across the room and the door was wide open. I got freaked out a little bit. I told my Dad the stories and how the chair was in front of the door when we left. He laughed at me and told me I was being silly. That he had went upstairs to see the whole place. I said "Yes I know you did, but I told you to put the chair back and you did." He insisted that no he must have forgotten to. I knew full well he had put the chair there, I saw him do it. I did not want him to continue to laugh at me though so I dropped it. I kept an uneasy feeling all day however.

That night once again I heard noises upstairs and once again I was too scared to check. I got my son in bed with me, shut my bedroom door and locked it. I then turned on my radio to try and block out the noises. I was literally scared out my mind. I may have gotten 2 hours of sleep that night. The next morning when I got up the chair was moved again and the upstairs door was open.

This happened the next night also. I kept trying to ignore all that was going on. I did not believe in haunted houses and I tried to convince my self I was imaging the noises. I had no explanation for the chair and door. I just tried to block it all out and go on with normal, everyday life, dreading night time.

On about the 10th day of living there some friends of mine from out of state came to visit. My friend is very spiritual and believes very much in ghosts. When they walked in my house, she looked at me really strangely and said "You need to move this house is haunted." This sent shivers all through me as I had not yet told her the stories. I tried to laugh it off but I was visibly shaken. I tired to act like I wasn't though and told her that I had not heard or seen anything and nothing was wrong with the house.

She finally let it drop and we decided to go visit a mutual friend. A couple hours later we returned and when we walked in the chair was once again in the middle of the front room and the door was open. My friend noticed this right away and said "All Right, come clean. You are not telling me something. Why is that chair in the middle of the darned room and the door open?" I told her it must have been like that when we left. She argued with me that she knew full well it was not. I finally told her the stories and what I heard and experienced the last few days.

She insisted she was calling her Aunt who was a paranormal investigator and she was going to have her come over right away. I finally agreed, feeling very silly about the whole situation. When her aunt arrived I felt like I was in the middle of haunted movie. She came in with a bottle of holy water and a bible. When she came in she said she could feel something eerie in the air and that something was definitely wrong in this house. Her and her husband went upstairs as she was saying things about spirit leave this home and such and splashing holy water around.

A few minutes later they came back downstairs and she was white as a ghost and she was ordering me to leave the house that there was some very evil spirits in the house and they wanted to hurt my son and me. I was 22 years old living by myself with just my baby. This scared me completely to death. Just the look on this woman's face and with everything else, the fear inside me was massive. I asked no more questions. I just grabbed me and my son some clothes and left to go to my friends house. The next day in the daylight we returned to get my belongings, I was not about to live in this house again. I have past it a few times since and it always gives me the creeps.

It has been nearly 20 years since this happened. My husband now, which is my second husband, has his own idea of my story. He feels that because I turned my landlord down and had no way to pay the rent that he was trying to scare me so I would leave. This is possible I suppose. I however argue with my husband. If this is so then how did he do it the middle of the night? My husband's explanation is the landlord had an extra set of keys and would come in when I went to bed.

I guess this is possible too. But why would a landlord go those means to get someone to leave? Why not just tell me to leave? I don't know for sure what was going on in that house. I guess I will never know for sure. I do know that I was scared to death; I know no one has ever lived in that house for more than 3-4 months at a time. I do know something happened. I just don't know what.
