My Hero

Quickpaws
My spirit cries in darkness
For a kiss or warm embrace.
Each night, I lie in solitude
While minutes past me race.

This torturous existence
Is my spirit-draining fate,
A punishment...
A test I'll fail...
The object of my hate.

I venture to my mirror
And recoil at the reflection:
An unloved woman,
Not pursued...
Unworthy of affection.

The dinner dates that never come...
The weekends spent alone...
The hopelessness that taunts me
With the silence of the phone...

Each day, I die...
Unwanted,
While all my friends are paired.
It seems to be a nightmare
From which I can't be spared.

My death seems more inviting
As I face each lonely day.
It's waiting to release me...
Just an accident away!

It will ride in like a hero
In the stillness of the night
To rescue me from dark despair.
With Death I'll take my flight!

He's the only one who wants me,
So to HIM I'll give my all!
(No handsome suitor beckons me
To heed love's ardent call.)

So I'll await
My final fate
From dawn 'til setting sun,
'Til Death shall snatch his waiting bride...
And we shall be as one!
