My husband-to-be suggested we shave our heads and get married in wet suits. It was his solution to my problem.
I'd planned to marry with my hair flowing past my shoulders in a half up hairdo under the hood of the cape that I wore over my dress. But that was not to be.
My hair was permed at that time. I needed a new perm before the wedding. The church my foster parents were pastoring had split before we came. My foster mother suggested that I go to the hairdresser who had left the church in the split to make peace between the two sides.
Perhaps she was nervous. I know I was. I went to her two weeks before the wedding. I wanted to work out any bugs that might come from the perm. I told her that I'd been swimming in an over chlorinated pool and that my hair had previously been permed. She used a regular perm on my hair. It severely damaged my hair. I don't know what we were thinking of, but we decided that a color treated perm, as a second addition, would correct the problem.
Let's just say that it didn't look like the first perm. The temples were stretchy like latex. Parts of my hair were fused together and other parts were extremely frizzed and flyaway. It was a fright wig and I was getting married in two weeks.
I went home and showed my husband-to-be. He then made his suggestion of shaving our heads, which I declined. Then he took me to the main ministry building where we were staying. We showed my hair to the leaders of the ministry and my foster parents who were hosting a dinner. We were all upset. Then someone suggested another hairdresser in town. We made an appointment. He took one look at my hair and told me that it wasn't the first time he'd needed to correct someone else's mess.
I didn't walk down the aisle with a bald head or in a wetsuit. Nor did I have my fright wig mess or the long flowing hair I had planned on. But I did get married looking nice with my very short, curly pixy under the hood of my wedding outfit.

I planned to teach college art in studio & history. But I needed to home school our son and did short term missions instead, which benefited from my education. I write about the trips I take for our ministry. View profile
