My Interest and Belief in the Paranormal

"What are some of your favorite shows?" people often ask me.

"Well, I like Gilmore Girls, Family Guy, Paula Deen's cooking shows, and I like to watch Ghost Hunters," is one of my typical answers.

"Wait-- Ghost Hunters? That's the show where they go around trying to find ghosts isn't it?" these people will ask, with an incredulous look on their faces.

"No," I'll respond, "they try to disprove the existence of entities in a place."

"Do you actually believe in that stuff?" they ask.

"Yes," I'll say, "I do."

"But why?"

Ah yes, the question of "why?" This question also comes with the looks of disbelief, and a few look at me like I have two heads or something, because I believe in the paranormal. I must admit, I was once a skeptic. I would snigger and roll my eyes when girls wanted to have seances at sleepovers and stuff, dismissing the thought of ghosts, as ignorant, because there was "no such thing."

Why do I believe now? I have never had a personal paranormal experience myself, but I have seen and heard too much on Ghost Hunters, as well as other shows, not to believe. Some people, such as my friend, Kim, will argue that they can make up anything and put it on television. Yes, that's true, but deep down, I just think there's something genuine about the guys from The Atlantic Paranormal Society. These guys aren't like other sci-fi-crazed geeks, who go around saying that aliens exist, and that they knew they did, because they'd been kidnapped by them. These guys don't even go into a case, trying to prove that there are entities. In fact, they try to disprove their existences. In the process, they pick up some pretty creepy things. My favorites? the electronic voice phenomenon recordings, and the responses on the K2 meters.

Electronic Voice Phenomenons (E.V.P.) recordings are recordings that aren't picked up by the human ear at the time that they happen, but exist when the recordings are played back later. Honestly, I think these creep me out more than seeing the entities myself. The clearer the E.V.P.s, the more creeped out I get. To hear something that's not there, say something, just gives me an unsettling feeling.

K2 meters pick up electromagnetic fields. In some instances, where there is a field, there is an entity. What I like about the K2 meter, is what I've seen on Ghost Hunters. The guys from The Atlantic Paranormal Society, use this device to communicate with possible entities, and get direct, visual results. For example, once Jason and Grant were investigating, I think, Slater Mill. Along with all the other questions the entity was answering, Jason asked "How many of you are here? When I get to the correct number, please light up the device." Jason then counted to six, and the device lit up like a Christmas tree. This case was one of the first times I'd seen the K2 meter used, and I was impressed by the results.

Many more tools, such as the E.M.F (Electromagnetic Field) dector, thermal imaging cameras, etc. are used, these two are my favorites.

"So what?" these people are usually still thinking.

I can't make you believe. Sometimes, it takes a personal experience to make someone a believer. Other times, all it takes is seeing an episode of one of these shows, like it did with me.

"One last thing," they'll add. "Aren't you a Christian? Aren't they forbidden to believe in ghosts?"

I haven't read the Bible all the way through, but I am pretty sure there's nothing that says not to believe in ghosts. I am pretty sure that it says not to meddle with witchcraft, however acknowledging the existence of entities, isn't meddling with witchcraft. Christians, especially those in more charismatic denominations, acknowledge the existence of demons. If they do that and are justified by the Bible, then why can't a Christian also acknowledge that there are ghosts, when there is nothing in the Bible that says not to?

Also, Christians often mistake associating ghosts with evil. This is a definite misconception. Sure, some ghosts are aggressive and harmful, however a lot of entities dwell where they dwell simply because they are attached their old homes, or objects in those homes, or they are watching over their loved ones who are still alive. They want to cause no harm, but simply exist.

The above reasons are all why I believe in the existence of paranormal entities. Some may agree with my reasons, and some of you are probably thinking I'm a nut job. However, the proof is in the hunting.
