I found my very first cat in a very strange place, in front of a Kmart store, a few years back. Some nice lady had found some brand new kittens in a bush. I'm not sure if the mother abandoned them, or if she went to find food. She put the kittens in basket and brought them to Kmart to give them away. They were so cute that people were snatching them up like crazy.
I had always wanted a little kitty, so as soon as I saw those cute tiny orange bundles the choice was clear. I picked one up and she scratched and clawed to get free. I quickly put her back. Then I picked up the next kitten. It just lay quietly in my arms, looking as if it wanted to nod off to sleep. "I'll take him," I said to the lady and walked off with my new pet.
As soon as I walked him away from his brothers and sisters he started going crazy! He scratched and clawed to get away, and I almost considered turning around and giving him right back to the lady. I held him up and away from me as I finally decided to keep him and see what happens. As soon as I got him in the van he ran off and hid under the back seat.
Bonding
When I got him home he ran under the bed again. I put some cat food out and he came out to eat. A few hours later I was sitting down watching television, and was surprised when this tiny little furry bundle jumped up onto my lap. He curled up in a ball and fell almost instantly asleep. I was amazed, and I knew that was going to be my road dog, or rather road cat, from now on! I named him Tomy.
Tomy Today
Today my little Tomy is a huge, agile cat. He's about three inches taller than most cats, and 3-5 inches longer. I can't believe how quickly he grew from that tiny kitty. His claws are some of the sharpest I've ever seen and he doesn't seem to understand that human skin is not the same as couches and furniture.
Despite being a male, he is sort of like a mothering type to the other cats. He grabs them and licks their heads affectionately. Sometimes just a little too affectionate. Even as I type he is sitting on my stomach digging his sharp claws into my skin. Aaah, cats. He's lucky I love him! I definitely made the right choice that day in front of Kmart.
