My Little Garden

Gardening in the City

Mark Longtin
I love to sit on the patio in the morning with my cup of coffee and listen to the wind blow threw the trees. Sometimes I imagine that I am in the forest and there are no houses next door, no cars driving by and no fences to keep me inside. I have four types of plants in my little garden, tomato, bell pepper, banana pepper and some strawberry's. I have tried to grow them in the ground but it always fails for many reasons around here, so I am growing them in buckets this year. They all seem to be doing pretty good so far. I love to walk out and find food ready to be picked. I love to eat the strawberry's right off of the vine. Granted they are still small and not enough to make a pie out of but I enjoy the fact that I am growing some of my own food.

I have some chimes that I made that hang just above my little garden. As the wind gently blows they make their low pitch sound that reminds me of a blacksmith pounding away on a hot piece of metal down the road about 100 years ago. I hear the falcon that lives near by as he flew through the trees looking for breakfast. A storm is slowly rolling in right now and the low rumble almost puts me to sleep, it's soothing and calming somehow. I have a couple of crate myrtle trees in my back yard that give me shade when the hot Texas sun is burning in the sky.

A beautiful cardinal just flew by, I guess he is looking for some food. He makes a high pitched chirp that sounds like dry erase marker as you write and how it will make a squeak. A mocking bird is serenading his mate right now and the breeze feels so nice and cool as the storm approaches.

My little garden is not very big but it's the joy that it brings me is what matters. Sure I probably will spend more money on it than what I would have spent on fresh vegetables and strawberry's at the store, but it will be a close amount. But that isn't what is important. What is important is that I can enjoy it, even in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city. As I block everything else out, it's just me in my little garden.
