My Mom's New Boyfriend (2008): a Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
My Mom's New Boyfriend is an action/comedy starring Colin Hanks as Henry Durand. Meg Ryan plays Henry's mom Marty. Antonio Banderas plays Tommy, Marty's new love interest and Henry's new assignment. Selma Blair plays Emily, Henry's fiancée and fellow FBI agent. Henry is a young FBI agent who is ordered to spy on his mother and her new boyfriend, a suspected art thief in town to steal a priceless statue. Warning: my movie review contains plot spoilers.

Not a bad movie but not a great movie either. The plot was interesting in the beginning but then tended to drag. Plus the twist was very predictable. Of course Tommy isn't really an art thief; he is an undercover CIA agent. Yeah, saw that one a mile away.

Antonio Banderas was great in the movie. He was his usual drop dead sexy and funny self. His accent was excellent as always. My boyfriend is not a big movie watcher but the first thing he said when Tommy talked for the first time was "It's Puss in Boots." Yes honey, now hush so I can finish drooling over Antonio.

Colin Hanks was good but a little forced, especially with his interaction with Selma Blair. The characters are supposed to be in love but they had no chemistry at all. Colin and Meg were great together for the most part. I was amused by the fact that Meg Ryan played his mother because she has starred in a couple of movies with Colin's father Tom Hanks. Unfortunately the connection just shows that Meg is not a young actress anymore. I couldn't get over Meg's face. It was a cross between the Joker and Joan Rivers. She has had way too much plastic surgery. It is too bad she decided to mess with nature because I am sure she would have aged beautifully.

The worst part of the movie was Meg Ryan. Besides the freak show that is her face, her character Marty isn't even likeable. Marty was a fat overprotective mother who was depressed when her son went off on a secretive assignment. After getting a reality check, she loses tons of weight, makes tons of money on the stock market, and becomes a heartbreaking party girl. Oh and my favorite part was she really didn't seem all excited to see her son after three years. Instead she was more worried about her hot date.

My Mom's New Boyfriend is an average direct to video comedy that is a way to pass the time if you are really bored or looking for an Antonio Banderas fix. I give the movie 2 out of 5 stars.
