My Most Memorable Mets Game

A Look Back at the 2006 New York Mets

Carly Nunez
The 2006 Mets were unstoppable. With plenty of heart, determination, and courage, they were not an easy team to set aside. Young superstars David Wright and Jose Reyes had emerged, Tom Glavine, a veteran pitcher, still continued to impress many. Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran were hitting like there was no tomorrow. The whole team had reason to celebrate when they were the 2006 National League East Division Champs.

They continued to turn heads by sweeping the Dodgers in the Division Series. This Mets team was on a roll!
I couldn't help but think, "Are we World Series bound?" It definitely appears that the Mets were headed in that direction. The Mets were forced to play a game Seven on October 19th, and my most memorable moment will begin. The Mets are in a 1-1 tie with the St. Louis Cardinals. Oliver Perez is pitching in the top of the sixth, facing the Cardinals' Scott Rolen. The ball appears to be a home run, but Endy Chavez, in left, makes a leap up into the air at the wall and makes the catch! He does not stop there. He throws it in to double Jim Edmonds off first.

The Mets ended up losing that game. Yadier Molina of the Cardinals hit a 2- run home run in the top of the 9th. The Mets sent Carlos Beltran to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, two outs, facing Adam Wainwright. He struck out to end the game.

I have to say I was very impressed with the 2006 Mets. They showed me the definition of perseverance. I know they worked very hard to get where they did, and that season is my favorite to look back on. The 2006 Mets were the Team, the Time. They gave Mets fans everything a Mets fan could ever want, a team built to contend.
