My Most Memorable Mother's Day

A Week Spent in the Intensive Care Unit

Neftali Vilchis
Mother's day in 2005 was a very hard time for me. My daughter was in the intensive care unit and we had no idea what was wrong with her.

I was at work that morning and around 10:00am I received a call from my husband telling me that I needed to get to the hospital immediately because my daugher had had an accident. At the time, my mother and father cared for my daughter while I worked so I imagined she had a broken arm or she had fallen. When I got to the hospital, I was taken to the emergency room entrance and into her room where she was being treated. I called her name when I saw her and she immediatley stretched out her arms to me and began to cry. My daughter was 3 at the time. I thought it was strange that she would not look directly at me but I thought nothing of it until the doctor told me she was blind and could not see me. I immediately began to cry and my mom and dad hugged me. We had no idea what was wrong or why this was happening. Suddenly, she began to have a seizure--apparently this was her third one since that morning--and I was told to leave the room while they cared for her.

She was admitted into the intensive care unit and we were there for about a week. They ran a number of tests for her and found nothing wrong. The doctor came in one day and told me we may never know why she had the seizure eipsode but that it appeared to be something beneign. We submitted her to several tests in the following months and visited several neurologists but nothingwas ever found. My daughter was put on Trileptal medication for about a year and up to this day she has never had another seizure.

I will never know why she went through that or what happened but I do know that this had made me appreciate her even more. You never know how much your child truly means to you unitl you go through something like that.

We were worried that she would have developmental issues because of her seizures but nothing has happened so far. She is one of the top students in her class and has even qualified as a gifted student. Her eyesight came back shortly after she was discharged from the hospital. I can only hope she will be healthy for the rest of her life. If anyone has gone through this or if you have any idea what may have caused it, please let me know.
