My Movie Score - Juno Reactor

I have a movie in my head - who doesn't? My movie is cyberpunk, a hackers-esque style movie trending toward post-apocalyptic world changes, like computers taking over and becoming more human than humans. Old ideas, new spins, and all that. While my movie might never get made, I know that when I think about it, I picture a movie that isn't dark so much as raw, like old Film Noir infused with modern (and post-modern) technology.

If I were to choose music that would fit the movie, Juno Reactor would be my one and only wish. They are a band whose music varies between Electronic, Trance, and Industrial, with some World flavors to some of the songs. Some of their music was featured on the soundtrack to Mortal Kombat, but for me, they would handle the entire score.

Juno Reactor's music would be great for a film score because they can encompass any feeling necessary. They can make something seem both quiet and build anticipation with the same piece of music. They can create the feeling of silence with sound. It sounds strange, but the music just has a lot of feeling to it. Take their song God is God, for example. It's Industrial and World, with some voice parts, and you get the feeling of walking purposefully down an urban street in a post-modern industrial area, perhaps with underprivileged people sitting around and watching you, like a refugee camp.

In another track, Pistolero, you begin with what sounds like Spanish music, which turns into another World-Industrial amalgamation after a woman's voice says "I hate robbing banks." The sound of firing bullets is used to punctuate the music, and you get a steampunk old-west feeling from it. During the faster parts, I can easily picture a chase on horseback. Another song, Swamp Thing, begins with a heavy bass beat with a pulsing feel to it as it moves into the rest of the song. There's constant high-pitched noises that remind me of crickets, and that bass beat threats throughout the entire song.

Because they can infuse their music with suggestions so strongly, I think that it would be perfect to have a tech-based movie like mine scored with Juno Reactor's music. It's a style of music that relates to the subject matter, as opposed to a score by John Williams, who is perfect for Fantasy and real-life movies, but wouldn't work for a techno-punk style.
