My Nick Name Snowflake

Faith Draper
I was 14 years old, a freshman in high school, when I acquired the nickname of 'Snowflake'. A group of friends on a school bus gave it to me early one morning. Snowflake stuck with me through high school.

Dad had bought snowmobiles for the family and Mom got all of us snowmobile suits. Both were very practical for Wisconsin winters. Snowmobiling was great fun but without the warm suits the blistery cold weather would have spoiled any fun fast.

I picked the suit I wanted. Since I also enjoyed down hill snow skiing I selected an ice blue two-piece snowmobile suit - pants and jacket. I could wear the jacket with jeans or ski pants. The jacket had an attached hood with white fake fur around the edges.

The ice blue jacket was so warm and cozy I took to wearing it all the time, including to school. Believe me I needed all the protection I could get in the 30 below zero winds off Lake Michigan. Well, at least the top half of me was warm. It was after all the 70s and mini-skirts were in.

The morning I got my nickname Snowflake, I was waiting for the bus. It was snowing, those big fluffy flakes and I was bored. I pulled the fur-trimmed hood of my snowmobile jacket over my head and started to turn in slow circles. When I heard the school bus down the road, I headed down the driveway to the road.

I had no sooner gotten seated on the bus than the girl down the road who was now seated a couple seats behind me yelled, "Faith what on earth were you doing by the garage?"

Not thinking the whole bus would hear my answer I quickly responded, "Pretending I was a snowflake."

That was all it took! For the next three and a half years my nick name was Snowflake. I suppose it could have been worse but did feel rather silly the night a group of girls, me included, was hauled into the local police station and asked if we had any alias's or nicknames.

So terrified of what my father was going to do when he found out I was in jail I didn't think of anything. My friends were kind enough to let the cat out of the bag - my nickname, Snowflake. I got some very funny looks from the police officers.

The ice-blue ski/snowmobile jacket lasted all through high school, as did my nickname. When the coat was retired and I graduated from school the name seemed to go with them.

The final farewell was graduation night as I walked up to receive my diploma 126 people; my classmates together murmured 'Snowflake, Snowflake, Snowflake' loud enough I could hear them. It brought a light laugh from the teachers and staff seated nearby and tears to my eyes - I knew it was the end of an era.

Oh, one more thing, I should explain why we were taken to the police station that night. It was a small town with little to do for fun. When we discovered the Catholic Church parking lot was a sheet of ice we decided to learn how to spin donuts.

Yes, high school girls spinning donuts in the church parking lot in our parent's cars. We were disturbing the peace. The oh so kind Grafton, Wisconsin police department managed to scare us half to death but sent us home without calling our parents. We never did donuts in the church parking lot again!

Not including my married names I have been known by two nicknames other than Snowflake: Princes by my paternal Grandfather and Faye by the family of my best friend. I carry titles of daughter, sister, niece, cousin, aunt, mother, and grandmother.

Cute story... especially in our world where innocence, if not entirely dead, seems to be seriously wounded...

Cute story; thanks for sharing. Sounds like the "spinning snowflake" just grew into the "spinning doughnut girl" ...too bad about the whole police station journey/experience.

It's actually a very pretty nickname. I was hoping you would explain the police station. Glad you didn't leave us hanging on that one.
