The most annoying and frustrating of the problems I'm having is the crashing. My N85 reboots on its own every time I try to use it for video playback. If I'm lucky, I can get a few minutes of playback before the phone decides to reboot. The constant restarting makes that nifty TV-out cable and OLED display pretty much useless. In addition to restarting during video playback, I've also had the phone go out while recording video and playing N-Gage.
Another annoyance is that calls fail to connect on the first try almost every time. I will dial a number and after a short pause I get a "connection error" pop-up. Usually on the second or third try my call will go through. It seems to happen with messaging also. I am assuming this is a phone problem and not a service provider problem because I did not experience this with the N82 or any other phone I've had my sim in.
There are also a few other minor issues I've noticed. One is that logs clear when they are not supposed to. Another thing I've noticed is that a couple times when the battery ran out, I had to reset time and date settings.
Because my phone is from another country, I'm not sure that I can have it serviced under the limited warranty. My hope is that this is a firmware problem and not a hardware problem but after reading so many great reviews I wonder if I just got a defective phone. In any case, I don't think I have the nerve to be an early adopter of such expensive devices. I would like for any item I spend more than $400 on to "just work" out of the box. The next time around, I won't be buying anything from Nokia unless the firmware has been updated at least once.

Post a CommentSince I started to use the phone, it's main problem is that it corrupts the data on the SD Card. No matter the brand or the quality of the card, is an issue with the phone.
Sometimes the result is losing your mp3, other times your pics... and recently i lost 3 years sms just because of this problem.
After been a patient Nokia customer (6280 and N81) I decided thos is my last Nokia
my phone call any number by itself without me toughing it it simply do a lot of things by itself
My N85 (bought in Sep. 2009) has the same problem. Drops every second call with a 'Connection Error' message - it pops up exactly three times before the call if dropped. Redial goes through fine. My friends are now used to it. I had dropped the phone once 1 or 2 days after I bought it so initially I thought the call dropping was a result of that. But I guess the phone itself faulty. This is an unlocked phone I bought from Dell instead of AT&T - guess I'm stuck with it now for a while. The only other problem I see with the phone is when I copy new mp3's to it and they are "not compatible" my music player goes crazy saying the whole sd card is corrupt. Then I have to delete the R1_Mobile_4_0.cfg file (using FileManager) and on reboot it gets recreated. my sandisk sansa used to play every damn file i dump in it. N85 is too choosy!!
there is a new firmware now but you will have the same call droping problem with the new firmware too so its just going to stay like that which is such a drag i getting another because of this reason
Faith I have to use mine in offline mode too. Now media playing, and the camera is all it's good for because the phone function has completely failed.
I had exactly the same problems. I searched for a cure for at least a month. At last I found that I had to use my n85 in offline mode to be able to play ngage and view videos properly.
I'm in the same box as you are; in Australia, got an early version in from Singapore - phone frequently drops calls on Optus 3G within first 15 seconds (always fine on redial though), and also the phone will spontanously reboot especially whilst charging. Whilst not ultra-frequent, it happens 3-4 times per week at least. I'm on the latest firmware (11.047) dated 19-11-2008.
Hi.
I'm experiencing the very same problems plus a very serious one: during a phone call, people listen to what I'm saying clearly, but I don't hear a thing. The earpiece isn't broken, because in the beggining of the phone call, i hear them perfectly, but after a fee seconds it's like it turns off or something, I can't hear a thing!
My phone also reboots every single time i try to play videos and sometimes while using the ngage aplication.
Oddly, and try this please to see if the same happens to you, when i use video playback in offline mode, it works just fine.
It seems the phone goes mad only when the sim card is inserted.
I've already updated the phone's FW but it didn't help a bit. Same problems. I'm SO disappointed.
Good luck with your phone and if you ever need to vent a bit, because I do, just mail me and we can share our progress with this tech piece of cr@p.

Goos luck ;)
I have the same issues! I hope they will solve this soon
All your problems are true. And you are not alone. Theres many lurking the nokia forums with the same issues.
The problem I'm been having is the camera. Whenever I take photos the results come out fuzzy/shaky and not sharp at all......no matter how steady I hold it. I'm praying its a firmware issue or else that just sucks...cos i bought this phone for a decent mobile camera :S
