I've always believed that the United States was the best country to live in the world. I felt that way because I thought Americans had access to the best life had to offer. Now we are struggling with how to provide everyone with the help they need to live as long and as healthy as they can. To me, the life of every living person is important. We only have one life and we are entitled to live as long and as well as we can.I do believe it is an entitlement we get just because we are alive.
It confuses me how people who are anti-abortion can also be against providing all Americans with the best health care. I live in Alabama, a state that is very anti-abortion. But at the same time they are against health care reform because of the expected cost increases. To me that says 'once you are born I don't care what happens to you'. They have health care programs to insure children in the state and most can have coverage. As you age you lose the easy access to insurance. So adults and elderly struggle to pay for the drugs and medical care they need. At what age do you become expendable?
I have always believed that abortion should be the decision of the mother. As a therapist I have had women come into my practice with feelings regarding that decision. But the choices we make in our lives should be ours alone to make. Society should not dictate our personal morality.
It's too bad that abortion is the issue being used to manipulate the future health care of everyone in the country. Concessions seem to be needed to achieve the goal. I hope abortion reform is not part of the health care bill but I will understand if it is. Abortions will continue to occur no matter how laws are changed. It will become more dangerous and lives will be lost because those changes. But health care reform must pass. If giving in on this one issue will guarantee better medical care for everyone then I guess the bitter pill must be eaten.
