My Pick for Coach of the Year: Florida Gators Head Football Coach, Urban Meyer

Amy Stepp
It is hard to make a great case on who should receive the Coach of the Year award, however, I believe Urban Meyer, Florida Gators head football coach, has a great resume for the winning spotlight.

Lets talk first about his game winning history. So far in his 4 years with the Florida Gators his record is 44-9 which is tied for the third best record in the nation for that 4 year time span. Not only has that record tied for the third best record in the nation, it is also the best record in the SEC conference in the last 4 years. In his last 3 season he has lead the Florida Gators to 35 wins! GO GATORS!

Still not impressed, well lets talk about the BCS standings. Since Meyer has been the head football coach for the University of Florida, the Gators have been ranked 47 weeks in the top 10 under his coaching platform. Top that off with Meyer being only one of three coaches in history to lead a Number 2 team over a Number 1 team on two different occasions.

Wow, I guess I could bring my case home with the BCS National Championship titles he has won for the Florida Gators. Not only is Urban Meyer the first coach to ever win two BCS National Championship titles but he is also the only coach in the history of the SEC conference to win 2 National Titles.

We could talk all day about Meyer's record but I believe there is also more that needs to be talked about when you are trying to argue who needs to be the Coach of the Year. I believe a mans integrity should play in affect. If you ever turn on the television on Saturday to watch the Florida Gators play you will not only see an outstanding head coach walk up and down the Field but a man who truly cares about his players and visa versa. I never in all my years of watching college football see grown men come off the field and go up to their coach, put their arm around him and lean on him like it was their own dad. That shows me a lot when it comes to a man's personality. If you can gain the respect of your players then you know you truly have a great heart of gold.

A few years back I was watching Game Day Live on ESPN one Saturday morning and remember they were at the University of Florida. They did this little piece on Tim Tebow and the Gators. Tebow talked about how Urban Meyer had set aside a day of the week (I believe it was Thursdays) to not practice but to invite the players families in and share time with one another. Eat a great dinner and relax. How many coaches would actually do that when their team is playing for the National Championship every year and every practice counts? A man who really cares about his players well-being.

So, I stated my case that Urban Meyer should be named Coach of the Year. Even though he has already won it 3 times before, that shows he is definitely worthy of such a great honor! Go Urban Meyer, Go Gators, and I can not wait until the college football season starts so I can watch this team have another great year under this great man!

Well Mr. Double-O I see where you are coming from. I am the first to say that Gators have one of the easiest schedules around this year, however they are dominant even when they have hard schedules as well that has been proven. Who cares who they play...just look at the scores they have posted in the last couple weeks, and if they were such a bad team then they would not of been able to triple their scores on their oponents! Again I say Go Gators!
