My Picks for the 10 Best Music Videos of 2010

A Great Song is Only Made Better with a Great Music Video

Sherri Thornhill
I love a good song and it doesn't matter what music genre it is in. What is even better is when a really good song gets a great music video to go with it. I grew up in the twilight of MTV and real music television that used videos to bring songs to life. We don't have too much of that anymore, but thanks to iTunes and YouTube, music videos have made a bit of a comeback. You can buy the video of your favorite song on iTunes, but if the video is not something special, why would you? I found 10 special music videos in 2010 that were made for incredible songs.

My list is below and you can click on the song title to see the video.

10-The Script "Breakeven"

The song says, "What am I suppose to say when I'm all choked up that you're ok." The video shows the journey of two lovers and the truth that when a couple breaks up, one person nearly always ends up more hurt than the other.

9- Jason Derulo "My Head"

Jason is singing and dancing with a girl he meets outside a convenience store. He is putting on the moves and saying all the right things in the video, but as it turns out, it really is just happening in his head! A great song and a cute music video.

8- Lady Antebellum "Need You Now"

Ah, this song is for everyone who has made the 1 a.m. drunk call to an ex, telling them how much you need them. Sure you'll regret it in the morning, but it always seems like a smart idea at the time. One of the best songs of 2010 has an appropriate video to go with it.

7- Christina Perri "Jar of Hearts"

This music video has had well over 3 million views on YouTube. It's a perfectly haunting and well done video about a guy who thinks it's a game to make women fall in love with him. "Who do you think you are, running around leaving scars? Collecting your jar of hearts and tearing love apart."

6- Train "Soul Sister"

This music video has been purchased on iTunes over 4 million times and watched on YouTube over 15 million times. That makes it a very popular song and popular video. I like the simplicity of the band standing on a street corner and singing and playing this terrific song.

5- Adam Lambert "Whataya Want From Me"

Adam performs in this video as Adam and not "Glambert". He sings the song to someone we never see and though it seems to be for a lover, it could be interpreted as a song to fans or the media, "Hey, whataya want from me?" One of my favorite songs of 2010 becomes one of my favorite music videos of 2010.

4- Travie McCoy (featuring Bruno Mars) "Billionaire"

Who doesn't want to be a billionaire? The great thing about this song and video is that it shows Travie McCoy handing out money and trying to do good with it. It's a fun song that was greatly enhanced by Bruno Mars vocals and the perfect music video.

3- Pink "Raise Your Glass"

Pink is constantly standing up for the underdog, and "Raise Your Glass" is a perfect underdog anthem. This music video is brilliant with how well it goes with the song and the humor and sarcasm it uses to point out the hypocrisy of many. I raise my glass to Pink!

2- Eminem "Not Afraid"

Eminem made a comeback this year and tried to show that he has grown as an artist and matured as a man. "Not Afraid" was the perfect song to express his improvements without belittling others. This video has had a staggering 171 million views on YouTube! He still cusses, a lot, but this music video of Eminem walking through the streets and acknowledging his changes gets my pick for second best of 2010. "To the fans, I'll never let you down again. I'm back. I promise to never go back on that promise."

1-Lady Gaga (featuring Beyonce) "Telephone"

Lady Gaga is one strange bird and the "Telephone" video shows that though she is strange, she is talented. Besides, strange can be good sometimes. The full video of "Telephone" runs over 9 minutes and has been viewed on YouTube nearly 100 million times. It goes from a prison scene to some weird Thelma and Louise scene with Beyonce. The video has nothing to do with the song, but it is a cool little mini-movie anyway. Lady Gaga and the "Telephone" video get my pick for the top music video of 2010.

  • good pics, couple of opinions, though . . .1/6/2011

The Telephone video marked the first moment I questioned Gaga. Along with Fernando, it started me thinking, "Uh-oh, Gaga's falling into the I-gotta-be-a-hot-babe rut already." JMO. And Train's "Soul Sister"video - I'm sorry, a "soul sister" in real life and in the tradition of rock music is a sexy, wild, keep-you-laughing-and-thinking all the way to the poorhouse/jailhouse/protest line/nightclub BLACK woman. So casting a white chick? Looks like the Train pulled out of the station with those boys' balls on it.
