My Picks for Best Super Bowl Ads

Budweiser and ETrade Were Among My Favorites. But My Number One Pick Surprised Even Me

Don Simkovich
I'm partial to ads that have a good storyline. So the ad I chose for number 1 had several elements that I genuinely liked.

1 Chester Pitts, NFL Ad

I simply thought this was a great story and one I didn't know about. In the span of a Super Bowl commercial, they followed Chester Pitts through the narration of a teammate, from his days stocking groceries to being drafted by the Houston Texans. There was an element of fun and, dare I say, humility with Pitts' teammate announcing how Pitts got drafted before him.

It was well done with strong development of all the characters portrayed.

2 Budweiser Clydesdale Ad

Okay. The theme has been done but this commercial that showed a Clydedale horse getting rejected from the team and then secretly training for a year with a Dalmatian had inspiration with a little help from the Rocky theme.

I watched this while sitting with some senior citizens who all applauded at the end. Of course, I would rather have been sitting with a bunch of 25-year-old to 35-year-old females but . . . anyway, I went home at half-time and watched the second half in my living room.

3 eTrade with Baby Boy as trader.

It was a funny concept - even a baby can trade on eTrade. The voice used for the boy was done quite well as well as the type of animation. On the second commercial I saw the boy had earned enough "coin" , as the slang was used, to hire a clown. His comment was the clown was a bit more unnerving than he expected. This remark was even more funny to me since a week ago online there was a report on how most kids are afraid of clowns.

4 Lifewater Ad with Shaquille O'Neal as the Jockey

Fairly original and funny. It had some nice details thrown in such as a messy kid picking his nose as the horse was coming down the home stretch and a jockey slapping O'Neal in the butt while in the winner's circle.

5 Planter's Cashews

Good concept - a woman who was more gaudy than attractive used the aroma of Planter's Cashews as perfume and men were going crazy for her while she was riding the bus, walking down the street, etc.

6 Career Builder

The one with the male office worker crooning into the night sky. This was funnier to me than the first one where the woman had heart leap out of her blouse and told her boss she quit with the slogan "follow your heart."

The last I thought was a little clever was the Coca-Cola ad with Bill Frist and James Carville. Although Carville to me is a "tired" figure and he's not figuring as a well-known personality in the presidential race. A lot of viewers may not remember who he was.

The other ad which was funny was the Budweiser ad with cavemen - but cavemen using modern lingo like "this wheel suck" and "this bottle opener suck" is a pretty sure hit for a laugh. So I didn't feel it should rank as highly.

The other Budweiser ads were okay.

The ad which I thought was almost clever because it was done so simply was the Victoria Secret ad with a gorgeous model of couse that aired toward the end of the game with the message "this game will be over soon, but let the real games begin. Happy Valentine's Day." Not very creative. But a quick message nonetheless. As I think about it, maybe it was more of an effort to just stick the name in front of millions of viewers.

Superbowl commercials can be hilarious. Great picks!

I liked the Budwieser frogs and the Justin T. commercials.

Thanks for this. I missed the superbowl writing articles!

Another observation: I don't see any of the ads being ones as the foundation for an on-going strong campaign of any kind. Going back to Louie the Lizard and the Budweiser frogs -- at least that had longevity. It's like they spend $2.7 million on one shot ads that have no future value. I suppose the eTrade one could have longer term potential.

Raquel . . . yeah, your comment regarding Victoria Secret was nice and concise - that's what I meant to say . . . just show a lacy heart with "Happy Valentine's Day" and then "Victoria Secret" and that would have been all. No imagination for such a huge brand name.

Great article though I was disappointed in the ads again this year. The screaming animal one was pretty good though.

What about the one for the car with the screaming animals! That was my favorite. Followed by the baby ones and the talking stain. Most of them were horrible again this year! I think you did well in picking out some of the good ones. Although the career builder ones were horribly stupid.

Nice. Check out my top ten. We've got some of the same picks. (I should have included Chester Pitts, in retrospect.)

  • Rachel Krech 2/4/2008

The Victoria's Secret ad was really stupid. They should have just flashed their logo for 30 seconds. It would have probably been cheaper.

    :) cool review
