My Proposal Story

Paige Nieto
My relationship with my husband is not one you would classify as typical. We never officially dated; we went from friends, to a "little more" then to engaged. The proposal can't even be classified as usual as I was in Austin on summer vacation and he had already flown back to California to Camp Pendleton. So he asked me to be his wife it was over the phone. However he did ask my father's hand in marriage which was more than a little endearing (of course my dad being my dad responded "Well son it's not really my decision to make but sure go ahead"). We were engaged-due to the circumstances however I was ring-less but I didn't care in the long run. I had finally had the man I wanted the one I knew I was meant to spend the rest of my life with and I was happy.

Fast forward to December. I have winter vacation and he has two weeks leave. I was so excited when I picked him up from the airport because while we kept in touch via phone calls and emails I hadn't seen him since we became engaged. Of course the first thing we do afterwards is go eat as he was hungry after the plane ride so we headed on to Zio's because we were both feeling Italian. We get there and he asks me to open the trunk but when I go to wait for him he shoos me away talking about "Go inside, don't wait in the cold I'll be right there". Calling him silly I headed to the door and waited for him to join me. We sat down and eat enjoying the nice warm food, and catching up and of course being able to physically see and touch each other. I excuse myself to go the rest room and come back and we are finishing up and he goes "Oh babe can you hand me my hat?"

I looked at the table at his baseball cap which was exactly in the middle of the table. "It's right there."

"I know but can you hand it to me please?"

"Are you serious," I asked looking at him like he was stupid. "It's right there right in front of you."

"Babe can you please just hand me my hat?"

"Fine! What the hell is-" and I stopped as I picked up the hat and sitting there was a ring box sitting on the table. I was speechless and almost near tears as I looked at him and he was just sitting there smiling at me with all the love and adoration on his face. I opened the box and nestled there was my engagement ring complete with the wedding band so I got to see the full picture of what my rings would look like together. I was like "Oh sweetie" and he took my hand and the diamond engagement ring and said I didn't do this when I asked you, but now we'll make it official and right. Will you marry me?" and I looked him and said "Of course I will."

There were no violins and no hot air balloons. The waiters didn't sing and there wasn't applause. But still I do believe and I always will that my engagement story is special is its own way.
