1. I would invest in a house for each of my children. The house would not be overly large, yet not in a rundown neighborhood. Each of the children could decide on what area of the United States the house was in, and would be given a budget of say $200,000 to purchase their home. However, I would not put the home in their name alone. My name would also be on the deed. This would be one way to ensure they had a roof over their heads and did not squander it away by re-mortgaging it. I would also insist that each child continues to work to pay for utilities and their expenses, just as I plan to continue working after winning the lottery.
2. I would invest in low-maintenance real-estate with a good monthly return on the investment. While some people would think investing in an apartment complex would be an ideal investment, I would have to disagree. Personally, I would not like having to be that involved with people. If I went rags-to-riches by winning the lottery, I would invest in something like a U-Store-It business or possibly a mobile home/RV Park. In actuality, I believe I would invest in one in each of my children's neighborhoods. This would give them an income as they oversaw the day-to-day management of my investment. They could choose to work at the U-Store-It or hire someone out of their portion of the profits. It would be up to them.
3. As a loner, winning the lottery would make one special dream of mine attainable. My husband and I are both reclusive by nature. We would invest in a large ranch in the middle of nowhere. This would be our special retreat from the world. We could raise our cattle and enjoy what we enjoy the most, the peace and serenity of the outdoors with the animals. My husband and I have often discussed the type of house we would put on the ranch. Personally, I would like a small home just big enough for the two of us. He wants the huge house with the works. As long as I did not have to deal with the hired help, I might be able to get along with his idea!
4. It would be time to pack up our new Montana 5th wheel and do a little traveling. My husband and I just upgraded our travel trailer and it is perfect for the two of us. We would, of course, pay-off any outstanding debts we have before hitting the road. While we are gone on our tour, we could stop in and check on all of the kids and their families. That would be the time to agree upon the houses and U-Store-Its they selected. We would also check out anything that caught our eyes, the national parks and monuments for starters. Winning the lottery would allow us the freedom to move has we wanted to, if we wanted to. We would always know we could go back to the ranch any time we wanted in this rags-to-riches story.
5. Winning the lottery would mean my husband could retire, though I would continue to write. My dream career has always been to be a writer. Instead of focusing on how much I was bringing in, I could focus on projects that are close to my heart. I have several book ideas that I could bring to life, including the story of my great-grandmother pioneering to New Mexico and a fantasy novel I began as a child. I would write for the love of writing in my Redneck Retirement Fund rags-to-riches story.
Well, I am off to the store. It is time to make an investment in the Redneck Retirement Fund. Wish me luck in winning the lottery. I hope you can follow your own special dreams as well.
