My Review of the Olympics

James Kent
Well it has been a great Olympic Games and for the most part I will look back at it with great memories. No real surprise to see China, USA and Russia head the medal table, but a great effort from Great Britain who finished fourth. This represented the best result and performance by a British team since 1908 and the second best overall. The other highlights were the insane success of Osian Bolt, an incredible athlete that we will surely see again in four years time. Let's not forget Phelps whose eight gold medals is an incredible feat.

Not all is perfect as mistakes were made. The Relays were fairly disastrous as USA, Great Britain and Jamaica crashed out at some point, when they were likely to challenge for medals. Great Britain in particular will be disappointed with their performance in Track and Field. For all their success generally a lot more was expected in this area. There were also disappointments for Britain in BMX, Tennis, Hockey and Eventing. It's not all bad news as there were some unexpected medals in areas such as Swimming and Modern Pentathlon. That was also in success for Britain in areas they were expected to do well such as Rowing, Sailing, Boxing and Cycling.

There was a contentious moment in a Taekwondo match featuring British hope Sarah Stevenson. Originally she was knocked out the competition, but after studying video replays and an appeal she was reinstated. I do applaud the Chinese for making the correct decision, but the scoring system must change in order to ensure the correct results are made in the first place. I will also remember this Olympics for the Jamaicans making their mark in the sprint events. Breaking World Records and winning gold medals is a fine achievement for such as Small Island. We should also remember that in a way it's easier for them when they have only one or two areas to focus on. Looking at the top four countries they all won their medals in a broad range of sports. The British team was competing in a lot of different areas, so it's easy to lose focus on one or two areas. Whereas the Jamaican's only have the Track and Field events to focus on. Overall I enjoyed the Olympics and can't wait for 2012 to begin. I hope in four years time we will celebrate another fantastic Olympics.
