I got a star chip while driving on the freeway. The size of the damaged area was about half the size of a dime with several spider legs. I checked online for repairs and decided to fix the damage myself. I read several reviews of different windshield repair kits and ended up buying the Permatex kit at Autozone for $10.49.
The key is to follow the instructions and to improvise when necessary. I would also recommend watching the Permatex video demo several times to familiarize yourself with the process. I kept my laptop near by so I could play the video and pause it after each step. Following the instruction guide and watching the video demo helped tremendously.
Adding pressure to the syringe plunger is not recommended. Extra air pressure will push the resin between the pedestal and adhesive disc. The resin will burst and leak on the windshield. If this happens clean the resin on the bottom of the pedestal. Use a paper towel and wipe off any residue on the windshield. Have extra alcohol pads or other cleaning material near by. Attach the pedestal back to the adhesive disc. Keep the pedestal firm in place. Follow the rest of the procedure as outlined.
There is no reason to use all of the resin when filling the pedestal ¾ is more than enough. Get inside the car and check the amount of resin if you're unsure. I used the remaining resin for the curing strip twice.
Overall, the product works effectively if you follow the instruction and watch the video demo before and during the process. The repair time takes less then an hour. The chip is barely noticeable.
I give the product 4 out of 5 stars. I would also recommend Fix-A-Windshield by Fix-A-Flat.
