Having toured several caves, where you will often see bats, I knew that it was probably way more afraid of me than I was of it. So I hurried through the rest of my shower so that I could take care of the situation.
After drying off and quickly putting on some clothes I grabbed one of my big fluffy cleaning towels and went back to the bathroom to see what was up.
My new friend was still there. His head moved a bit but there was no other movement from its tiny little body so I assumed that my one of my kitties had a hunting session with the bat last night and it ended not so good for the bat.
I grabbed the little fellow up in the towel, careful to keep my skin away from his mouth area - after all my cats have all had their rabies shots; I on the other hand, have not.
The little guy started chirping at me, so I knew he was scared now and I tried to get him down the stairs and out the door as quickly as I could.
He chirped all the way down the stairs and through the kitchen and into the living room but as soon as I released one hand from the towel to grab the doorknob, the chirping stopped.
'Uh-oh' I remember thinking.
It was completely dark in my living room and kitchen because and I had not wanted to release my grip on the towel in case the bat decided to wriggle his way out so I didn't turn on any lights. I know - I should have used my elbow.
Anyway, I now realized that the bat was gone. And since they are extremely quiet fliers and the room was dark, I hadn't the slightest idea where he had gone.
I am figuring since I couldn't find him in any of my rafters that he flew up the fireplace but I wasn't about to stick my head up there to find out. After all, if he was up there, he was probably still pissed.
So I am thinking I may have at least one new roommate? Wonder if he eats cat food?

Post a CommentOMG you are a far braver woman than I! I have no idea what I would do in that situation. The bravest one in my house is NOT my DH or my oldest son...my five year old little girl would probably have to deal with it! And then she'd cry when I wouldn't let her keep it for a pet....I guess I'm just glad I live in a place where we don't get many bats!
Did you ever find him again? That is a curious roommate to have. I could envision many women running out of the shower covered in suds screaming their heads off. Poor little thing. I have had similar problems with swifts that flew in through the bedroom window.
Still got your new roommate? I think I'd have a heart attack if I saw one in the shower!
@len... this was a little tiny bat... body about the size of a mouse... wing span on the other hand... quite a bit larger!!!
:0)
Oh my! When my Daddy was alive, we rented a house. We didn't have bats, but we did get some rats and some possums at times!
@david - agreed!!! :)
New roommates are often different than they first appear to be... no matter how many legs they have!... just like most new relationships :-}
Oh, my God...you wouldn't believe how many times that's happened to me! Except in my case, it's a huge, hairy rat with red eyes stalking me in the shower. But seriously, though, I didn't know bats "chirped!"
OMG, you FINISHED your shower? Not "jumped out naked and dripping wet?
yikes i would be able to sleep either!!!
