My Son Parties like a Rock Star and My Daughter Hates Your Girlfriend

Radio Song Recommendations by My Children Ages 5 and 3

Heather K. Adams
My two kids have great taste in music. They love it when I crank the tunes in the van on long trips. Often I catch them dancing in their carseats or trying to sing along. Here are their top five faves. Please keep in mind that they are hearing the edited radio version of these songs!

Cupid's Chokehold - Gym Class Heroes
This song came on the radio the other night, and my five-year-old son got very excited. "Mom! Did you know that in the video to this song, there's a boy Indian and he gets shot with an arrow by a girl Indian!" I have no idea where he saw the video, but I was so curious when I got home that I had to youtube it. I burst out laughing when I saw the young black male cupid, and sure enough, at the end of the song, he was shot by a little girl cupid. Feathers, wings, arrows... makes sense to me.

Paralyzer - Finger Eleven
My son insists that he wrote this song. Just out of the blue one day, the song came on and he announced to me, "Mom, I wrote this song. They're playing my song on the radio!" I laughed and told him that this song was by a band called Finger Eleven. He then explained that his name was just different when he wrote it, but it really was his song. When I pulled up the video for this article, he said, "Wow! I didn't know they made a video for the song I wrote!"

Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day
While my son is a bit delusional about who wrote 'Paralyzer', he knows with absolute certainty all about this artist. I had the radio volume down really low while trying to navigate through some heavy traffic (well, heavy for North Dakota) and my son screamed for me to turn it up. "It's Green Day Mom!!!" I couldn't even hear it, but sure enough, it was 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'. He knows every word to this song (edited version, of course), and really he knows all the words to every popular Green Day song off their 'American Idiot' album. I tried getting him to listen to earlier Green Day, but he insisted that wasn't them. Oh well.

Party Like a Rock Star - Shop Boyz
It's hilarious when this song comes on the radio. Both my kids start head banging with such serious looks on their faces. With the simple chorus, they can sing along with it, so it is quite a sight. Oh yeah, my son wrote this song as well.

Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne
I couldn't figure out what song my daughter was imitating the other day, and then I heard "Hey hey, you you, I don't like your girlfriend," in a completely obnoxious valley girl voice. But somehow, when it's a three year old singing it, especially my three year old, it's not only tolerable, it's freakin' adorable.

LOL ~ Thanks, you made me laugh this morning! Yes, 3-5 is too young for SOAD... however, my son has a birthday next month... perhaps then... ;)
