My Son's First Trip to Disney World!

Darlene
I was one of ten children, and we were very poor. I remember watching Walt Disney World every Sunday night with the family sitting all around.

It was a highlight of the weekend that I always looked forward to, and I really enjoyed all of the shows they aired, but I especially liked the fireworks!

Time passed, I grew up, and began my life as an adult. Although I finished high school, I never really made that much money in the job market.

I eventually moved to Puerto Rico where I had some family, and stayed for a period of ten years. During that time, I married, had a son, and divorced. Eventually, I made my way back to the Main Land, and reunited with my family.

I had always dreamed of going to Walt Disney World, but either never had the money, or opportunity to go. So, there I was in my 40's, when one day I was talking on the phone with my sister. She was telling me that she was planning another vacation to Disney World with her son, who is two years older than mine.

Our sons had always gotten along well, and since I had always dreamed of going, I asked if she would mind it my son, Randy and I went along too. Of course, I would pay for our own expenses, and she jumped at the chance of our little boys sharing the experience.

Our son's birthdays are one month apart, and this trip was being planned as a surprise birthday gift for my nephew. So, I decided I would surprise my son with an early seventh birthday present as well.

I didn't tell him anything, but the night before the flight, I told him that he needed to go to bed early because I had a special surprise for him in the morning, but he had to get up really early.

We went to sleep, got up the next morning, got ready, and headed for the airport. Once there, my son was full of questions, and it was all I could do not to answer them. Boy did he pester me! After a while, my sister and nephew showed up, and my son thought that was the surprise. I was grateful for that because at least he stopped pestering me with questions.

We happily got on the flight together, flew to Orlando, landed, and arrived at our hotel. It was beautiful, and our children were so excited. Although my nephew had been to Orlando and Walt Disney World several times, he too was excited that he would be able to share this new territory with his cousin.

We did one park a day so that we could fully enjoy each. Then on the day before we had to leave, my nephew wanted to go to a water park, and I decided my son and I would go alone on to Disney World.

We were so excited, and I couldn't believe how big it was. We spent the entire day in the park, riding the rides, eating, walking, looking, laughing, and sharing.

As evening approached, I kept careful eye on my watch because I wanted to see the world famous fireworks I remembered from watching TV during my childhood. My son didn't know what was about to happen, but I could feel the anticipation building.

I just kept telling him another surprise was on the way. The sun set and it got darker while Main Street filled with people. Then all of a sudden, our surrounding erupted with sound! My son looked very shocked, and I guess I looked surprised because he didn't get scared. I turned him, and pointed saying "Look".

His mouth dropped, and I could see his face light up with disbelief and amazement. While we stood there watching these beautiful and famous fireworks my eyes filled with tears. I was so happy in that moment. Here I was experiencing something I had heard people talk about all my life. I listened to people talk about their personal experiences here, and yet others their dreams of one day being there.

Yet, there I was in the splendor of it all, with my six year old son. I cried, and thought how proud I was that I was able to give this special gift to my young son, and myself. For as old as I was, the joy I felt at this experience alongside my son was a dream come true!

Great story thats how I feel every time I go to Disneyland. It's always a good feeling standing there watching those fireworks fill the sky, and it always brings a tear to my eyes.

Very beautiful story. I write for AC and my husband just leaned over to see what I was reading and I told him about your special story and we both caught a tear. Great job. We're happy for you.

Very well written, I am the sister, Darlene accompanied to the birthday surprise trip I set up for my son. We had a great time and both children were really surprised. it is true that we grew up very poor and we have both wanted to give our children more than we had growing up. Life goes by so very quickly, it's so important to spend quality time with your children because before you know it they are all grown up and moving on with their own lives. Great job on the story Darlene.

In your comments I read that someone disliked the fact that you wrote about your child but I see no one writing any criticisms of that nature, I should share with you my experiences of being there twice. Quite the stories and quite the confirmation of my personal relationship struggles with the one who I shall not name. You know who...

    Peace and Blessings,

    Sincerely,

    Gary

I wrote this article because I was asked to write about vacation with the kids. That's why it's written the way it is. If you dislike the fact that I wrote about my child, I'm sorry but that's the purpose of the assignment.
