My Story as an Intern

What is it like to be an intern? Is it always a rewarding opportunity? In this article, I will be discussing what my experience as an intern was like.

Being an intern was an interesting experience. I applied for my internship during my final three months of college. After waiting about a week, I received a reply to come in for an interview. The interview went well, and two weeks later I was an intern at a gaming company called Worlds Apart.

On my first day, I was introduced to everyone. Worlds Apart was a small gaming company that worked on Star Trek games and a Lord of the Rings game, among others. There were probably between five and ten guys who worked at this company, at the time. They were all very nice, and I even got my own office all to myself.

My typical job was just doing very basic work. You could say I did the "grunt work". On some days I would edit icons or other artwork in Photoshop, and on other days I would work in a spreadsheet program. I did not make their coffee, though. This was mostly because I didn't know how to make coffee; fortunately, it wasn't that big of a deal. I never drink coffee, so I don't know how to make it.

I also did web design work and some voiceovers, which I don't believe were ever actually used. Who knows, though. The guys at the company also tried to teach me how to play their Lord of The Rings game, but I never really could figure it out. At that time, I didn't really know too much about the Lord of The Rings. Thus, I didn't understand the game very well.

What were the hours like? Well, they weren't too bad for me. I would generally work nine hours a day, or more if I had a class. The nice thing about this company was that it was literally right across the street from my college. So after work, I would go to my four hour class and then take the bus home. I guess on some days you could say I worked thirteen hours.

Were there any special perks for being an intern? Sure. The company would go out to eat, and I was always invited. Of course, I would have to pay for my own meal. The company did treat me to a few movies for free, and the boss even bought me some Lord of The Rings trading cards. That was nice of him. In fact, I still have those cards. Perhaps one day they will be worth some serious money, but I doubt it.

On my last day as an intern, the company took me out for dinner and to play some pool. Well, I guess you could say that I took them out because I drove. I had recently acquired a double cab pickup, and I hadn't quite mastered driving it yet. Fortunately, the only driving mistake I made was backing into a small concrete wall. I don't think the guys cared for that mistake too much, though. Sorry, guys.

How long was my experience as an intern? I lasted about three months, and then I had to find a job that payed. Internships do not usually pay. In fact, if they do pay, it will not be very much money. At least, that's the norm. Anyway, the guys never hired me for their company, but it was a unique experience. I made some friends, and I had something else to write on my resume.

Being an intern can be a rewarding and interesting opportunity. Internships generally don't pay well, but you do receive work experience. If that is what you're looking for, then by all means become an intern.
