My Story of Dealing with Sibling Rivalry

Kelly Fleming
When both kids my step-daughter and my son returned home from school they always wanted to be on the computer. She liked MySpace, and he liked the cartoon network. We developed a rule where they had to share the computer for a couple of hours until dinner was ready and that was it for the night.

The house we were renting at the time was small so we put the computer in the kitchen/dining room area. While I was making dinner I was able to watch everything going on between them. They would try and push each other away, and my son tried to push his Sister out of the way. She moved and he lost his balance and fell off of the chair.

We took him to the Doctor and found out he broke his wrist. My step-daughter just cried and cried thinking it was her fault. I would make sure she understood it was not her fault. The whole thing was just one big accident.

How do you decide who should get to go first on the computer. My Husband and I implemented a schedule that would alternate the days between them. My step-daughter insisted that my son gets to go first. They are very close still to this day. If you have kids there will always be issues between them no matter what you do.

My daughter India and my son Nav fight a lot, but they are quite grown up. They are 16 year old twins. As long as it isn't too serious, I leave them to get on with it, they always make up!
