Smith would also come under scrutiny for letting his son Saul be the starting point for several years at Kentucky, charges of nepotism were rampant. However, there was precedent for Tubby making such a move as his other son G.G. who player for his father at the University of Georgia was a standout player at Athens in his time there, but Saul was a different type of player and either Kentucky fans got their hopes up too high or being a star really wasn't Saul's way of getting things done in order to win games. Due to the endless pressure that is placed on a Kentucky men's coach it was becoming more and more likely that Smith would leave for the University of Virginia following last season, but Smith decided to tough it out in Lexington for at least one more year. The University of Virginia decided to go in another direction anyway after they hired former DePaul head coach Dave Leitao.
The hiring of Smith truly is an exemplary move on the part of the University of Minnesota, who need someone to mend a program that still has somewhat of a dark cloud swirling around it following the dismissal of Clem Haskins for his role in an academic scandal surrounding a Gophers team that went to the Final Four with star guard Bobby Jackson, now in the NBA and forward Jamal Thomas leading the charge. Really people who left FOR SALE signs on Tubby Smith's yard before he decided to leave Kentucky ought to be ashamed. Kentucky fans are way better then that and I say that as an outsider and an Iowa Hawkeye fan, but you can tell that Kentucky are knowledgeable, hard working, decent folks. The sign placers are descipable however. Those are the people who should be run out of town. The overwhelming pressure of Kentucky basketball is really too much just like a Notre Dame or a Nebraska in football, need to realize that these people are merely human and I commend Tubby for leaving there to go to Minnesota. His blood pressure won't be so high and there he can develop player without having to worry about winning a title every single year.

Post a CommentI think the Lickliter was a good move. I just hope that if he struggles out of the box that everyone will give him a chance. Going from Butler to a bigger school has been a mixed bag for some. Barry Collier struggled somewhat when he went to Nebraska and then there's Thad Matta of course who is doing quite well at Ohio State. Runner-up for the National Title is pretty good ehh? To get back to Licklitter however, he seems perfectly capable having beaten some of the "major conference" teams in the past and with his ties in recruiting the state of Indiana, maybe Iowa can grab a few more kids from the Hoosier state.
That's really interesting.
Great insight Tyler! What do you think of Lickliter?
