My Ten Favorite Bob Dylan Songs

James R. Ford
Bob Dylan is considered to be America's greatest songwriter. His career began in New York City in the early 1960's and extends to today. He still performs over one hundred concerts each year, and he releases new music for all to enjoy on a constant basis. Bob has won Grammy awards, Academy awards, and his music has been successfully recorded by many different recording artists.
Everyone has their own favorite Dylan song. Whether it's his early folk - Woody Guthrie style songs, his protest - civil rights songs, his electric phase in the late 60's, his New Morning - Blood On The Tracks period, his gospel inspiring songs, or his most recent work from the 1980's until today.
I have compiled a list of my own ten favorite Bob Dylan songs. Of course, over a forty year period of time, it is almost impossible to agree on what songs make the list and which songs didn't. Keep in mind that this is my list, complete with information on each song, the album the song is chosen from, and a sample lyric from that favorite song. I hope you enjoy it.

Mr. Tambourine Man
This is my favorite Dylan song. I don't know why. I just love it. The song first appeared on the album, Bringing It All Back Home.
lyric: '...hey Mr. tambourine man play a song for me, in the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you...'

Simple Twist Of Fate
There are many Dylan albums I count as favorites. The one that always stands out is Blood On The Tracks. This song was first featured on this album.
lyric; '...he felt the heat of the night hit him like a freight train moving with a simple twist of fate...'

Tangled Up In Blue
Another song from Blood On The Tracks. No small wonder that three of my favorite Dylan songs come from this classic album.
lyric; '...I must admit I felt a little uneasy when she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, tangled up in blue...'

Baby Let Me Follow You Down
From Dylan's first album appropriately titled, Bob Dylan. My favorite version is from his first live album, Hard Rain.
lyric; '... baby let me follow you down, I'll do anything in this godalmighty world if you just let me follow you down...'

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
Originally from the album, Another Side Of Bob Dylan. When you split up from your best girl, it'd be nice if she heard this song.
lyric; '...I aint sayin' you treated me unkind, you could have done better but I don't mind...'

You're A Big Girl Now
A sad song. I remember hearing this song in my head, while walking across the Boston Common, thinking about a girl I used to know. Another song from 1974's, Blood On The Tracks.
lyric; '...I'm going out of my mind, oh, with a pain that stops and starts, like a corkscrew to my heart, ever since we've been apart...'

Like A Rolling Stone
From the album, Highway 61 Revisited. You just cannot have a favorite Dylan song list and exclude this masterpiece. How does it feel?
lyric; '... you shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you...'

Jokerman
from the album, Infidels. The words, the lyrics. No one can string the thought process like Dylan.
lyric; '...you're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds, manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister...'

I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
From the album, John Wesley Harding. Very simple lyrics. Very effective meaning.
lyric; '...shut the light, shut the shade, you don't have to be afraid, I'll be your baby tonight...'

Gotta Serve Somebody
From the album, Slow Train Coming. Who do you serve? Is it money, your tv set, or is it something more powerful, more sincere, more everlasting?
lyric;...well it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord, but you're gonna have to serve somebody...'

Looks like I'm going to have to make another list of favorite songs. I know that some of these are your favorites. I know I've left out way too much. I know you're looking forward to the next list. Suggestions and comments are welcome.
Listen up!

Excellent picks and you're so right about Rolling Stone. Classic song! Like Priscilla, my list would include It Ain't Me Babe, the Turtles rocked it! And Positively Fourth Street -- you've got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend ... :-)

Being an ardent listener, I just cannot get enough of Dylan. Your pick matches with mine.
