My Thoughts on Jimmy Justice

Butch West

It is likely that very few people on either side of the law enforcement issues will like this article. I think crooked cops belong in jail until they repent and I think Midway, Georgia Police Chief Kelly Morningstar is a crooked cop, as are most officers who say "the law is the law is the law". It's often used as an excuse to justify an action by an officer who really has no other valid reason to enforce a law. Some of these officers would arrest God if they could. On the other hand, there are many good officers.

Jimmy Justice is someone I heard about on an NBC show (MSNBC) called "Caught on Camera", which aired here in the Austin area on Channel 159 (I think) on Sunday August 13, 2011. Jimmy Justice is someone who goes around taking photos of officers doing illegal things and post them online on YouTube. Many of the violations he catches are minor parking fractions that the normal citizen often gets away with. Some people say he is going to far, usually those getting caught, in my opinion. But I do think sometimes he is. He yells at the officers, in effect, harassing them, about their illegal activities.

I think Jimmy Justice might could catch more serious violations by city officials if they did not know he was there or had no idea he was taking pictures.

There was also another fellow on the same show taking pictures of prostitutes in his neighborhood. He had a good relationship with the police until he filmed them abusing one of the johns he had filmed. There was no resistance by the john, he was bigger and simply got a good and illegal beating by the police. He could of easily taken down the police had he wanted to.

Some states and cities are trying to make it illegal to take pictures of cops doing their jobs, but in many cases, the pictures can help the officers. If they are honest officers, and many are, they will not have a problem with citizen photography. If they are crooks they will have a problem with citizen photography. What about honest mistakes? I think the public is understanding and forgiving if honest mistakes are admited.

Some things that Jimmy Justice catches law-enforcement doing are illegal, such as illegal parking, or buying lunch while on duty, are really nothing. Most of us can get away with some of that. Yeah, they're violations, but they are so small a violation it's irrelevant, plus I would much rather catch crooked cops like Midway, Georgia police chief Kelly Morningstar and worse cops who are trigger happy. Yes, cops shouldn't park illegally, but it's only when they won't let us do the same that we should be concerned about them. There are good cops. There are those that say the "law is the law" in order to justify their dishonesty and that is who we should catch on camera. An honest cop doing an honest job will have no problem with people like Jimmy Justice. And you can be your own Jimmy Justice, get a camera, point and shoot (a photo) of people in public, including your public servants.

I am a freelance news reporter for our local newspaper - and taking photos of sensitive subjects requires that I first show my credentials before I can even get close to the scene. cheers ;)
