My Three Favorite Restaurants in Grand Prairie, Texas

Kenny Cantrell
I once heard two pastors talking; one was from Arlington, Texas and the other from Grand Prairie, Texas. The pastor from Arlington said that "Arlington was the heart of the Metroplex." The Grand Prairie pastor replied, "If Arlington is the heart of the Metroplex, then Grand Prairie must be the armpit of the Metroplex."

I like Grand Prairie there is a lot of history to this town. Avion Village (http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/Avion_Village_Mutual_Ownership_Corporation/info) is a famous land mark in this city and I have at least four friends that live there. Some my friends have lived in Grand Prairie for over 30 years and a couple of them for over 60 years, including a WWII vet. These folks know all the good places to eat and have taken my wife and I to these spots.

I like eating at these places, each one has its own unique atmosphere. The food has been good every time I have gone to each of these restaurants. The workers have always been kind and cooperative. I try to hit each one of these restaurants when I am in town. I hope you will try these eating spots for yourself.

Dallas Tamale Factory- Do not let the name fool you; this restaurant is located in Grand Prairie. I love tamales and these folks make some of the best tamales I have tasted from a restaurant. You can also enjoy a Coke from Mexico served in a glass bottle. The guacamole is pretty good and I usually get some to go. You can buy Mexican candy and sweet bread also. Tamales are not the only thing on the menu; the other items to eat are to numerous to list here.

One friend commented that if you took out the glass windows you would think that you were in Mexico eating at an open air restaurant. The atmosphere is one that I like very much, so we usually dine in. Food service is good and you get your meal not long after you order.

You can find a map and information at http://local.yahoo.com/info-24506553-dallas-tortilla-tamale-factory-grand-prairie.

Tons Mongolian Grill- This is a fun place to eat. You are seated and your drink order is taken. Then you proceed to the food bar to place the food on your plates. There are several meat choices to choose from and plenty of vegetables. Once you have chosen your food and seasoned it to your taste, you take it to the cook who cooks it on a huge round grill while you watch. They will add rice while they are cooking and will even add an egg.

The food is good and we usually eat at lunch time here, because it is a few dollars cheaper at lunch. Did I mention this is an all you can eat buffet. If you have some hungry teens, this would be one place to fill them up. I can't remember the exact price but it was around $7 for the lunch buffet.

You can find a map at http://www.tonsmongoliangrill.com/.

Mikes Real Pit BBQ- Now here is a down to earth good old fashioned family owned restaurant. The folks that own this restaurant have come to sit at our table and talk to us. It is in a small building that is not the fanciest place in town, but it has that hometown coziness to it. You will find all kinds of folks eating here from local Pastors to aircraft workers.

If I had to rate their BBQ on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest), I would give them a 7. I have had the BBQ ribs, smoked sausage and BBQ brisket, they were all good.

You will find a map at http://maps.google.com/maps/place?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=mike%27s+bbq+grand+prairie&fb=1&hq=mike%27s+bbq&hnear=grand+prairie&cid=8022080378207072428

If you live in the Metroplex area or you are just passing by Grand Prairie; give these restaurants a try. I believe that you would enjoy the atmosphere of Mikes Real Pit BBQ and the Dallas Tamale Factory.
