My Tips on How to Start a Career as a Media Relations Representative

SDR2010
If you are the type of person that would like to work alongside the stars but you are the type that does not want all the attention that comes along with being in front of the camera, if you would like to make the money that high paid Hollywood stars do but do not want to be followed by obsessed fans, then media relations is the right field for you. A media relations specialist is someone who works very closely with the star in order to keep his or her image looking good in the public eye. This requires that you do damage control whenever the star is getting bad publicity from the press or a major event has happened. If the media would like access to the star they will need to gain access and a media relations specialist is their gateway. This means that you will also be setting up interviews and autograph signings in addition to granting interviews to the media.

If the star finds it necessary to go into damage control then you will need to issue statements, which clarify the situation and where the star stands on the issue. If you work for a sports team then your duties will fall more on organizational things like coordination of team events and setting up autograph signings for the stars. This is a job, which pays well and still allows you to stay away from the lights and camera. In order to find success in this field you will need either a business degree so that you understand how tasks should properly be done or a bachelors degree in psychology because this is a field which will given you a unique understanding of the human mind and how best to issue statements which are logical so that people will believe them as the truth. One of the most important responsibilities is the ability to twist a situation to make the public believe the story, which you are presenting. You will be most effective if you understand the human mind and how best to manipulate this to get what you want. Either of these degrees will pass as a requirement and if you have connections within the industry then they will carry you a long way into making this your full time job and way to put food on your table.

If you do not have connections then you may want to land an internship at a talent agency before you apply as a media relations specialist because experience also helps to get you up the ladder faster.
