My Top 10 Barenaked Ladies Songs

Spider in My Room - Born on a Pirate Ship - A fun and whimsical song; don't expect it to make sense! It's about a spider getting killed by being sucked up in a vacuum and the ensuing flood.

Shoebox - Born on a Pirate Ship - This song's not as happy as it sounds. It was on the friends soundtrack, which helped the band gain popularity. It's about the lies that people live with, or more specifically, the lies that we all know we tell but we don't talk about. "Was it something I said or was it something you read that's making me think that I should never have come here?"

Light Up My Room - Stunt - A song with a hopeful sound to it. It's about an electrical field in someone's back yard, possibly all a dream. It has some silly lyrics just like most other Barenaked Ladies songs, but my favorite part is "If you question what I would do, To get over and be with you, Lift you up over everything, To light up my room." It makes it a love song, too.

Who Needs Sleep? - Stunt - One that you can't help but tap your foot along to. It's about insomnia. I love the effortless rhyming. I like the bridge, which goes, "So much joy in life so many pleasures all around, but the pleasures of insomnia are the ones I've never found..."

It's All Been Done - Stunt - Of all the songs I've chosen, this one had the widest following, since it was released and popular as a single. The album it's from, Stunt, is the Barenaked Ladies' most popular US album to date. It's All Been Done is about a couple that meets up during three different times in history, "before the fall of Rome," "before the West was won," and "on a thirtieth century night." My favorite lyrics are, "You go your way, I'll go mine, but I'll see you next time." It's a beautiful song.

Never is Enough - Stunt - Never is Enough is full of examples of things the narrator never wants to do. It's an interesting song because there are so many songs that have examples of what people are doing, or want to do. The chorus is actually my favorite part of the song: "I think never is enough, yeah never is enough, I never wanna do that stuff."

When You Dream - Stunt - This one's a great one for anyone who's ever been amazed at a baby. It's about watching one sleep, and wondering what a baby dreams about. "His fontanel pulses with lives that he's lived, with memories he'll learn to ignore." Another song that references reincarnation.

Some Fantastic - Stunt - Like Never Is Enough, this is a song that fantastic things that the narrator will never do. "There's a lot I will never do, some fantastic I know it's true, But none as much as my want to be with you."

Maybe Katie - Everything to Everyone - The most recent song on my list, I found Maybe Katie looking for a song with Katie in it. I was amused to see my favorite band had one! It's about an older woman, and has a bouncy rhythm to it and lots of good harmonizing. The Bathroom Sessions version is my favorite. Favorite lyrics: "Forever's not so long, stop moping."
