My Top 10 Memorial Day Tunes

Harold Dean Sink
With Memorial Day not far away, I thought I would put together my own top 10 list of military tunes that you may want to play or sing for those whom have fought for this great country of ours. I sure hope you like this list.

The Star-Spangled Banner

The Star-Spangled Banner is an awesome tune to start the day with, especially if you don't want to wake the neighbors with your bugle singing out, "The Revelrie." You may know that tune as your mother woke you up in the mornings with, "It's time to get up..." Yeah, that is the tune. So gradually turn up the music to the Star-Spangled Banner on Memorial Day.

The Army Goes Rolling Along

Of all the military songs, The Army Goes Rolling Along is an awesome tune to get the day started with after the other that is mentioned. It gets your blood flowing, and your mind moving. Your to do list will roll off well while listening to this tune. Get your body moving along to this famous song on Memorial Day.

From the Halls of Montezuma

I don't care how many times I hear this tune with or without the lyrics, it still sends chills down my back as I picture these braver than brave men in our military. I fell sorry for any foe of ours if the Marines were to march in on them singing this tune. That foe would be so set with fear they may just high tail it and run.

Anchors Aweigh

The US Navy could not have a more appropriate title for a military song as Anchors Aweigh. Sing this on your way to work and feel like a new person. That is if you have to work on Memorial Day this year. I find it to be an uplifting tune and song. Maybe you will, too.

The U.S. Air Force

I knew the Air Force had a song and tune, but I had no idea the title was so simplistic. The U.S. Air Force has been their song for many decades, and will go on being so. The only bit of it I know is the tail end of it from the commercials advertising about them.

Ballad Green Beret

The Ballad of the Green Beret sticks in my head from watching John Wayne in the movie about them. The Green Berets is one of the few movies I remember watching John Wayne act in when I was a kid. If you learn the words to this song, you may find yourself singing this song all day long.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Of all places for me to learn this song, I actually first learned it at church. A catchy tune, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" can be addictive in your mind, too. I can remember learning this in orchestra, and could probably still pick up the violin and play it without the score of music in front of me. This is a great tune.

When The Warrior Returns

You may find "When the Warrior Returns" more appropriate for Memorial Day. This tune may not be as catchy as the others, but the words can. Take the time to learn this song, and share it with others.

Stars and Stripes Forever

I don't think any other song we have can really capture the zest that our country has. Stars and Stripes Forever will probably be more remembered for its tune than the words. Most US Americans can recognize the tune for this, but may have no clue what the words are to it.

Taps

It can be a depressing tune, but this bedtime reminder was originally just a poem. If you must play it, play it indoors so as to not wake your neighbors. I'm giggling right now picturing many of you playing the CD or cassette of this outside on your patio or porch as the sun goes down on Memorial Day.

May you have a good day on Memorial Day. Hopefully, you will get the day off, and be able to go honor a loved one with a small flag or rose. You might just have the urge to sing one of these songs.
