My Top 10 Must-See Movies Starring Morgan Freeman

Rushelle O'Shea
One of my favorite actors made news headlines recently, when he spoke out about an ad that had been running for North Carolina Republican B.J. Lawson. On the advertisement, a voice that sounds convincingly similar to Morgan Freeman's endorses the NC candidate. Morgan Freeman wanted it made clear that he had not done the commercial advertisement, nor did he endorse any member of the GOP. Since this statement, Lawson's campaign has pointed a finger towards a political consulting firm, claiming that they were duped into believing Morgan Freeman had done the voiceover work.

If you're a fan of Morgan Freeman or if you're interested in checking out some of the work that he's done (when not collecting apologies from Republicans), be sure to take a look at this list of 10 must-see Morgan Freeman films. Whether you enjoy dramas, thrillers or comedies, there's something great in here for everyone:

Top 10 Must-See Films Starring Morgan Freeman

"A Dolphin's Tale" - I had the opportunity to go to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium last year, where I met Winter, the young dolphin whose incredible story inspired the film "A Dolphin's Tale." Starring Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman, this movie is the type that truly touches the heart and Winter's story is just amazing. Badly injured in a crab trap, Winter tragically lost her tail as a baby, but finds new hope when a doctor tries fitting her with a special prosthetic limb. Winter has since become an ambassador and friend to many people with special needs and it's truly amazing that her story can be shared with so many people.

"Invictus" - If you enjoy inspiring sports films or real-life dramas, you'll certainly want to check out "Invictus." Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman (cast as Nelson Mandela) and Matt Damon, this Oscar-nominated film tells the story of how president Nelson Mandela used the World Cup rugby matches of 1995 to help unite the people in South Africa.

"The Maiden Heist" - I'm a huge fan of both Morgan Freeman and Christopher Walken, so I jumped at the opportunity to watch this movie, despite the fact that I'm normally wary of movies that are released straight to DVD. If you're holding out on this one, because you're not sure, stop torturing yourself and rent it today - It's definitely worth watching. A witty comedy, "The Maiden Heist" is a comedy about three aging security guards who come up with a plan to steal the particular pieces of art that they've been guarding all these years...and have grown attatched to.

"The Dark Knight" - A great number of talented actors were overlooked in this film, following Heath Ledger's death. While Ledger did an amazing job as The Joker (truly unforgettable), there are many other good roles as well. Morgan Freeman shines as the chief executive officer at Wayne Enterprises (and Batman's armorer), Lucius Fox.

"The Bucket List" - Directed by Rob Reiner and starring legendary film stars, Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, "The Bucket List" is a hillarious and moving comedy about two older gentlemen who have both been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Together, the two come up with their own lists of things to do, before they "kick the bucket." Despite their illnesses, the two set out to cross off all the items on their list - and what an amazing journey it is.

"Evan Almighty" - I absolutely love Morgan Freeman's role as God in "Evan Almighty" as well as the movie that preceded it, "Bruce Almighty." Starring Steve Carell as Evan Baxter, this was one of the funniest movies to come out in 2007.

"War of the Worlds" - One thing that Morgan Freeman is certainly known for is his voice. Authoratative and almost fatherly, it draws the listener in keeps their attention. "War of the Worlds" received some mixed reviews from critics, but this Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise collaberration is definitely worth watching.

"Se7en" - If you enjoy tense thrillers or movies about serial killers, this is a must-see. Perhaps one of the best thrillers of the '90s, "Se7en" stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as two detectives who are out to catch a serial murderer whose kills corrspond with the seven deadly sins.

"The Shawshank Redemption" - This one makes my top five movie picks of all time, and for good reason. Based on the Stephen King novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption," it tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who is imprisoned for killing his wife. While in prison, Andy helps the warden with his money laundering operation and befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis "Red" Redding (played by Freeman), but it's the unexpected twists and turns that keeps this movie fresh and exciting.

"Driving Miss Daisy" - Winning an Academy Award for Best Picture, one can't help but smile and laugh at the story of Miss Daisy and her driver, Hoke Colburn. A touching film about overcoming stereotypes and prejudices, this amazing comedy-drama is an excellent film to watch on a rainy afternoon. Enjoy!

Most recently, Morgan Freeman has been narrating and hosting the popular Science Channel show "Through the Wormhole" and he replaced Walter Cronkite, doing the voiceover introduction for the "CBS Evening News."
