It was very difficult for me to choose just 10 songs, but I thought if I had to convince someone how great Mariah is, then these are the songs I would suggest they listen to. These songs show how well written her lyrics are as well as her great voice can sing them. Since it was hard to decide my top faves, I've listed these below in no particular order.
My top 10 favorite songs by Mariah Carey are:
10. When You Believe. From the albums #1's and The Ballads. This is a duet that combines Mariah's unique and gentle voice with Whitney Houston's strong vocals. It's a slow ballad that they sing so well together, and are completely in sync with one anothers harmony.
9. It's Like That. From the album The Emancipation of Mimi. Showing she knows how to forget her troubles, and still have a great time. I like this party song, because it reminds me that no matter how stressed out I get, I can still lose all my worries by going out and dancing, having fun with my girls.
8. Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now). From the albums Rainbow and The Ballads. No matter what they say, or what trials you have to overcome, you're still going to be ok. Let them doubt you, let them think you'll never make it. And if you keep working toward it, against all odds, you're going to accomplish it, and you will win. That is what this song says to me. She sings this with such emotion, it's heartfelt, and everyone can relate, no matter how high the goal is set, you can still win.
7. I Didn't Mean To Turn You On. From the album Glitter and she sings in her movie Glitter. This particular song is a favorite for the reason that it's sexy and flirty. We all flirt, we all like to have fun, and some of us may not even realize that we're flirting. Unintentional or not, we still do it. It's just a very playful song, which she sings real well.
6. One Sweet Day. From the albums Daydreams, #1's, The Ballads, and Greatest Hits. Harmonizing with Boys II Men with powerful vocals from both her and them. This sad sweet song lets you remember those who are dear to you, but are no longer around to share with them. Beautifully put together, it's a great song of remembrance.
5. Heartbreaker. From the album Rainbow. Featuring Jay-Z, making this song a great hit, getting both sides of the story. He said, she said. A song about that sweet talking heart breaker. Been there? Me too, you want to believe everything they say, and although you get hurt, you still seem to keep coming right back to them. That's what this song is about, and many people can relate (perhaps on one or more occasions).
4. Honey. From the album Butterfly, #1's, and Greatest Hits. Feeling a little more than dancing, this sexy song tells you exactly what being in love is like. And can't get enough of!
3. Butterfly. From the album Butterfly and Greatest Hits. Sappy love song, but wonderful lyrics about not holding too tight on your love, but rather letting your love go only to watch it come back to you. High notes as well as low ones, this is my favorite love song by Mariah, it's the one I keep on repeat to keep me feeling content.
2. Fantasy. From the albums Daydream and #1's. A romantic fantasy making daydream lovers seem real for all of us. I like this song mostly because the way she sings it, the lyrics make it sweet and a love song, but her voice makes you want to dance.
1. Always Be My Baby. From the album Daydream, #1's, and Greatest Hits. One of her slower songs (but not too slow). Love is truly the strongest feeling of all and first loves are always the hardest. They say that you never truly fall out of love your first time, you hold onto that feeling forever. And when they come back into your lives, that feeling you thought was gone, almost always strengthens.
All songs I've listed here are between the years 1990 and 2009.
I own a copy of every Mariah Carey CD, including the albums and compilations, and remixes. And although I have many more favorites other than these 10, those chosen for this article are the songs I grew up listening to. With my CD player always on repeat. Her CD's are the ones I keep coming back to over the years, and still can't get enough. Just another fan.
