My Top 10 New Years Songs

Tracy DeLuca
New Years Eve is a traditional time to let your hair down and party. Music and dancing is a large part of the New Year's Eve scene. While there are numerous collections of Christmas and other holiday songs, New Year's is slightly neglected when it comes to music. Auld Lang Syne is only great for about one play before you get so confused by not knowing the lyrics that you just hum. But there really are not many other songs about New Year's. Or so it would seem. Here, I have listed my top 10 choices for New Year's songs. Add these to your play list for your New Year's Eve party this year and dance the night away!

The Parting Glass - Typically played after Auld Lang Syne to officially ring in the change of year. This song is very popular in places like Ireland and Scotland but is generally lacking in most US celebrations. This is a very folky and melancholic tribute to a new day and a good night. Very appropriate for saying good night at the end of a party!

Home for a Rest by Spirit of the West - This is fabulous drinking song and is wonderful for parties. You can't help tapping your toes and dancing around when you hear this. It always makes me want to sing along!

New Years Day by U2 - This popular U2 song is instantly recognizable and easily sung along with. The beat makes it fun to dance to whether slow or fast. This one is sure to be a hit with any party guests.

Auld Lang Syne (The Millennium Mix) by Kenny G - A wonderful song to listen to as you discuss the past years. Very emotional and soft. Great for slow dancing. A wonderful version of the traditional New Year's Eve song.

A Long December by Counting Crows - A great song to listen to when you are making your New Year's resolutions. A very positive and beautiful song about hope for the New Year.

Will2K by Will Smith - This Rap pop song was released specifically for the millennium. The song still rocks it pretty hard for any New Year's celebration with references to Prince's 1999 and a sample from Rock the Casbah.

New Years Resolution by The Limousines - Fast paced with a good beat but not something most people are familiar with. I like this song quite a bit and think that throwing some unusual music into the mix makes people wake up and pay attention!

We Didn't Start the Firs by Billy Joel - An amazing and somewhat famous song that references history over a forty year time period. Great for reminiscing and a really catchy tune.

It's the End of the World (I Feel Fine) by REM - One of the best known and most popular REM songs, this song has a catchy melody and lyrics that everyone knows and will sing along to.

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve by Diana Krall - Diana Krall's sexy, throaty voice makes this a song that will have all of your guest's slow dancing on the floor and snuggling. A wonderful version of a great song.

1999 by Prince - No New Year's Eve party would be complete without this song. Even though we are now in the new millennium, this is still one of the best songs ever. Go on, you know you want to... party like it's 1999.
