My Top 5 Christmas Songs

Ainsley Patterson
I loved listening to Christmas songs as a kid, while we decorated Christmas cookies and baked fudge. My mother had an old Frank Sinatra Christmas radio broadcast recorded on cassette that we would listen to every year. I loved listening to Frank's deep voice sing all those Christmas classics. But I don't just love to listen to Sinatra and Cosby sing those classic tunes. Here is a list of my top five Christmas Tunes and what singer's version I like the best.

5. Mariah Carey-All I Want for Christmas Is You
I love this tune because it represents a major part of Christmas for me, love. Who doesn't love to have a special someone to share Christmas with? I love how the beat of the song is danceable and the words are easy to learn and remember. I love a song I can sing along to. I also cherish this song because my mother and I would sing along to it in the car whenever it came on the radio while we did our day after Thanksgiving Christmas shopping.

4. Pussycat Dolls-Santa Baby
Now that I am adult Christmas has a different meaning for me. I enjoy more of the adult things that you do for Christmas. I love purchasing gifts for me fiance, cooking dinner, cuddling together while we watch Christmas movies, and purchasing gifts for my cat who is the closest I have to a child for now. Since I play more of an adult role during Christmas now, I really have grown to like this song that has a more adult sound to it. And since it is meant to be a kind of sexy Christmas song, who better to sing it than the Pussycat Dolls?

3. Tony Bennett-My Favorite Things
I love this song any time of the year, it reminds me of my mother's favorite movie, The Sound of Music. I haven't really heard very many different singers sing this song, so I chose Tony Bennett because his is the version that I have in my iTunes library. I love the combination of horns and percussion in this song. I also like how it has the feel of a great song for a classy Christmas cocktail party.

2. Thurl Ravenscroft-You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch
I picked this song because it is a song that I heard every Christmas when I was younger while watching The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Even though this song doesn't have the warm lovey feeling of most Christmas songs, it still gives me that "Yippie Christmas is coming" feeling inside. It's weird how a song about a cold-hearted, green, Christmas hating creature can get me excited about Christmas.

1. Nat King Cole-Come All Ye Faithful
Even though technically Christmas started as a Pagan holiday, I like this song because its lyrics focus on what should be the true meaning of Christmas for all Christians: Jesus. I'm not sure what bells have to do with Christmas, but I do know what Jesus has to do with Christmas. I like the Nat King Cole version because it has that old time, classic Christmas feel to it, just like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby Christmas songs do.
