My Top 5 Greatest Movie Fight Scenes

Shaun M Mathis
A few weeks ago I was enjoying Kill Bill Vol. 2 by Quentin Tarantino, and I only watch it for the fight scene between Beatrice Kiddo and Elle. Watching these two women fight as if it was an actual fight to the death and not a theatrical coordinated scene, I composed my top 5 Greatest Movie Fight Scenes.

5.Jai White VS Uri Boyka (Undisputed 2) Although this sequel was not released in the movie theaters, the fight scenes in this movie were great. Jai White's character was a washed up American boxer that was set up by his shady business manager in Russia which landed him in prison. The prison Jai White was sent to was home to a ruthless Russian fighter, Uri Boyka, who's dream was to be the greatest fighter in the world. The warden convinced Jai White's character to fight the Uri Boyka to fed the demand of an underground betting ring. Hands down, Uri Boyka was a better athlete and overall fighter than Jai White and rightfully so, the Uri Boyka won the first fight and he should have won the second one as well but this is Hollywood. Uri Boyka was a great offensive and defensive fighter that used creative kicks, counter attacks and creative maneuvers to beat Jai White. Although it only lasted three rounds, the fight scene was great.

4.Neo VS Agent Smith in Subway (The Matrix) This fight scene was one of many that made the Matrix a box office hit, the subway fight between Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) Agent Smith was a far better fighter than Neo but Neo held his own. Unlike most movie fight scenes that seem too choreographed, this fight scene was far more believable, even the acrobatic high-flying kicks that Neo performed. Even though Neo caused Agent Smith to be hit by the train, Agent Smith still won that fight. The 20 hits that Agent Smith delivered to the body of Neo caused Neo to spit out blood although he was fighting inside the Matrix. Both these fighters displayed great skill using various techniques of martial arts and even some good old fashioned street fighting. Using the train as a weapon was an excellent touch.

3.Quick VS Vera in back alley (Harlem Nights) This scene was not great because of the fight sequence but due to the comedic quality of it. To see a woman the size of Della Reese manhandle Eddie Murphy was just classic. Not to mention, Della Reese went old school with it. She punched Eddie Murphy in between words, just the way Bog Mamma did when we were young. The best part of the fight was Eddie Murphy shooting Della Reese in the pinky toe. Why? Because its a pinky toe, who does that?

2.Beatrice Kiddo VS Elle in trailer (Kill Bill Vol. 2) This scene should be number 1 because it is the best one on my list but there are other factors. We rarely see two women truly fight in movies and when we do, the violence or extent of the combat is generally too staged which takes away from the fight its self. However, Beatrice Kiddo (Uma Thurman) and Elle (Daryl Hannah) raised the bar for women fight scenes to come. There were many factors that made the fight scene a great one to watch. The first factor was that the fight took place in a small, spaced- challenged single wide trailer, after Elle cleverly killed Bud using a Black Mamba snake. The two women fought like men and used everything around her to their advantage, as you should do in a fight. In addition to the martial arts, the two women used lamps, guitars, the heel of a shoe, the water in a toilet bowl, beautifully designed Japanese swords but ultimately the fight was concluded by Elle loosing her other eye. Not all fight scenes have to end with someone dying or being beaten to a bloody pulp. Beatrice Kiddo won her fight without permanently putting down her opponent.

1. Achilles VS Hector (Troy) "You won't have eyes tonight. You won't have ears or a tongue. You will walk the underworld tonight deaf, dumb and blind, and all the dead will know is this is Hector, the fool who thought he killed Achilles." Why was this fight scene so great? Achilles (Brad Pitt), displayed confidence on a level not seen before, fighting skill unmatched by anyone else and he was bold as all hell. In this scene Achilles rides his chariot and horse to the gates of Troy, by himself. At the gates of Troy was armed by some of the greatest archers in the world during that time period but that did not matter to Achilles. In front of his brother, father, wife and the rest of the kingdom, Achilles called for Hector (Eric Bana) to come out. Once in front of Achilles, he pretty much told Hector that he would not be victorious by quoting the lines I began with, "You won't have eyes tonight. You won't have ears or a tongue. You will walk the underworld tonight deaf, dumb and blind, and all the dead will know is this is Hector, the fool who thought he killed Achilles." Not only was the fight a great one, due to the immense skill possessed by Achilles, the end was even better. In plain view of the kingdom and outnumbered by the Trojan Military, Achilles tied a rope to Hectors feet then connected to his chariot. To make matters worse, Achilles drug the body behind him, away from the kingdom while looking at all the Trojans do absolutely nothing.

Individuals who choose to simply view "Troy" as opposed to reading Homer's The Iliad really miss out on some key events. Most importantly, the legend of Aquilles.
