Twilight: I admit, this was a movie I thought I would never watch. I didn't know what it was about, other than hearing folks rave over it and the book too. When my cousin came down to visit me this summer, she had brought along Twilight. I obliged and we watched it one rainy afternoon. It was not what I expected at all; it was so good, interesting throughout the entire movie, and I can't wait until the next one comes out soon!
In the movie Twilight, Bella moves in with her father in a town called Forks, Washington. She goes to a new school and eventually sparks start between Bella and another student, Edward Cullen (a vampire). Edward saves her life a time or two, and then, because Bella doesn't quite understand how he's been able to do so, he has to come clean to her about his super speed powers and instincts. A romance blossoms. The excitement begins in Twilight after another vampire, James, sets out to hunt and kill Bella, because her blood/scent has a hold on him. Edward and his family has to now protect her from James. I won't ruin the ending for you, but I will say that I am absolutely excited to see how things continue in the next Twilight, New Moon!
The Hunger: The Hunger was also a great Vampire movie. Miriam is the vampiress who lures in lovers and turns them into eternal vampires. As they wither away though, she takes them up to her attic and puts them in coffins, as they remain alive but in a vegetable state. In the movie, Miriam and her current lover John seek gerontologist, Dr Sarah Roberts, to see if she can stop John's deterioration. John looses strength and is taken up to a casket in the attic. Later, Dr Sarah Roberts shows up at Miriam's house wanting to see John but Miriam and Dr Sarah become instant lovers. Miriam, of course, turns Dr Sarah into a vampire. Spoiler alert: Dr Sarah tries to kill herself with Miriam's Egyptian pendant, her blood leaks to Miriam, and Miriam's spells are broken. You'll have to see how the movie ends for yourself!
Thirst/Bakjwi: Thirst, a film by Park Chan Wook, is about a priest who faces moral dilemmas. He volunteered for a medical trial that had killed everyone who took it, including the priest. But in a twist to save his life, Sang-hyun was given a blood transfusion, and unfortunately, this anti-virus vaccine and tainted blood has now turned Sang-hyun into a vampire! He becomes strong, drinks blood, and also seeks out another man's wife.
Dracula: This 1931 vampire movie is a classic! Renfield travels through the Carpathian Mountains to Dracula's Castle. He is welcomed by Count Dracula, who is a vampire. The two men discuss buying the Carfax Abbey in England. Dracula leaves the room, becomes a bat, flies through the window, and eventually bites Renfield. Renfield is put on a ship and is the only survivor once it arrives in England. From there, he is sent to a sanatorium, and sees Dr Seward. Dracula bites their friend Lucy, who returns later as a vampire, and goes after Mina, the doctor's daughter. Dracula must be stopped, and to find out if he was you'll have to see the movie if you haven't already.
Let the Right One In:Let the Right One In is also a Swedish novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Oskar is a 12 year old boy who is constantly bullied. One day a girl and older gentleman (Hakan, whose job is to get blood for Eli) moves into an apartment near him, and they cover their windows. Oskar and Eli meet, and he sees her strange behaviors. The two end up as a couple (though Eli is really a castrated male), but through a few peculiar events that happen, Oskar figures out that Eli is a vampire. Eli ends up saving his life towards the end of the movie, but you need to watch the movie for yourself for all the details!
You can find clips of these movies on Youtube if you'd like to preview them. Otherwise, I'm sure you can find them at your local movie rental place or used DVD stores.
