My Top Eight Reasons for Joining and Loving MySpace.com

Heather Michelle
A recent addition to the Associated Content library is a great article by a great author. "My Top Eight Reasons for Hating MySpace.com" is a humorous and insightful piece written by Barefoot. In this article, Barefoot delves into the world of MySpace and explains why he feels MySpace is overrated. It becomes quite clear that Barefoot has little experience with the actual world of MySpace and just what a great outlet it has become. Here are my top eight reasons for loving MySpace.com.

8. MySpace.com has helped to teach me basic HTML. While the majority of MySpace users are completely oblivious to HTML and simply copy and paste from other websites, there are those of us who are able to play around and tweak HTML to further personalize our MySpace page. HTML is a very useful tool and while I do not claim to be an expert, thanks to MySpace, I have become an HTML novice.

7. There are thousands of groups on MySpace.com. Anyone can find a group or several groups to join where there are people facing similar situations or enjoy similar hobbies. I have been able to find a group of women who are all dealing with PCOS, and a group of mothers who all live in my area, and of course my fellow writers here on Associated Content. It is nice to connect with people who share aspects of your life and the groups section of MySpace.com allows us to do just that.

6. There is always someone new and exciting to meet. Granted, there are crazy people and of course people pretending to be someone else, but even they have their own merits. If nothing else, they are probably quite interesting. As long as you are careful to protect your own personal information, there is no harm in branching out to meet new people.

5. MySpace is a great place to showcase your personal style. While most people are not capable of setting up their own web page, MySpace takes the guesswork out of it and makes it possible to build your own personal page. You can add virtually anything you choose to your MySpace page, whether it is background, pictures, avatars, music, and so much more. There are no two MySpace pages that are the same.

4. MySpace offers a great outlet to blog. While there are certainly many websites that offer free blogging, MySpace.com makes the experience easy and easy to share with others. There are also tons of great bloggers on MySpace. There is always an interesting blog to read.

3. MySpace allows you to spy on other people. Everyone has someone in their life that they like to check up on, whether it is an old friend or old enemy or even family. If that person has a MySpace page, then it is easy to see what they have been up to and who they are now. Their MySpace page will likely include photos so you can see who got fat, who got thin, who got bald, and who had kids.

2. You can make yourself out to be whoever you want to be. You can make your life seem better than it really is. You can make yourself sound worldlier and more cultured. Sure, this could be considered lying. It could also be considered exaggerating. My personal feelings are that as long as you are not completely misrepresenting yourself in order to swindle others, then no harm no foul. Personally, my life is great enough that I don't need to exaggerate, unless of course you count all of those really big books I said are my favorites but I have never really read. Hey, it makes me seem smarter.

1. The best aspect of MySpace is the ability to stay in touch with and reconnect with friends. There are people from high school that I was friends with and inevitably lost touch with. Now, we are all at the same point in our lives once again. Most of us are married and have young children. Reconnecting with friends has made MySpace invaluable to me.

MySpace.com has become a phenomenon. MySpace is a place where people can showcase themselves however they choose and connect with other people. Everyone is different and everyone has something unique to bring to MySpace. This makes it a fabulous place to meet people, reconnect with old friends, and stay in touch with people already in your life. Don't knock it before you try it, Barefoot.

If you are tired of myspace but want a way to connect with artists and musicians and then you should check out www.putiton.com
If you are tired of myspace all together than you should probably leave your bedroom and go interact with the real world ;)

#8 sucks. Knowing HTML is the biggest reason to not like MySpace. Sites like Weebly.com and ClutterMe.com are specifically created to alleviate these ails. MySpace should have come AFTER the popularity of the rest of these social networks.

Well-stated, Heather. Though I will just have to take your word for it!

Heather, most of the reasons you mention are the reasons that I like LiveJournal.com. I have tried MySpace and it is just clunky and glitchy compared to LJ. Oh well, until you all decide to move to LJ, I guess I will keep dropping in on MySpace occasionally to see some friends.

    Nope. I'm not a joiner. :) Nice take, H.

I like MySpace, too. It's sort of like life - you have your loonies, but you meet nice folks, as well. Great article.
